University of Chicago – South Campus Chiller Plant / Murphy Jahn The project for a new chiller plant at the University of Chicago provided the opportunity to design for function, performance, materials, construction while simultaneously considering how the technical equipment could be displayed as if it were a piece of art. Taichung Tower / Nicolas Laisne Architecte

Nicolas Laisne Architecte has been awarded honorable mention in the international Taiwan Tower Conceptual Design competition. The proposal placed fifth among over four hundred entries. Additional images, a video and a description from the architect after the break.

Since 2000, the MoMA and the P.S.1 have been running a competition under their Young Architects Program, each year inviting a group of emerging architects to experiment with new shapes and materials, resulting in a summer installation at the P.S.1. Past winners include WORK ac (P.F.1. Public Farm 1), MOS (Afterparty) and SO-IL (Pole Dance). Architects Newspaper recently announced the short list for the 2011 summer installation, which includes Interboro Partners (NY), FormlessFinder (NY), Matter Architecture Practice (NY) MASS Design Group (Boston) and IJP Corporation Architects (London). Matter Architecture practice was already invited to the 2008 competition, which also happened to MOS back in 2007, then winners in 2009. As usual expect a complete coverage here at ArchDaily, we look forward to see all the projects!

The Art of Urban Environments Festival celebrates how the arts are a positive force in the economic and creative life of communities. Organized by Lafayette College and the City of Easton, located in eastern Pennsylvania, the Art of Urban Environments Festival is an international event recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts with major support.

ArchDaily has recieved another submission from the Taiwan Tower Competition in Taichung, by Broadway Malayn. The project was dubbed 3x3x3 to represent the conceptual framework of the coalescence of three distinct features of the tower: environmental, social and economic.

Architects Leong Leong recently shared their photographs from Turning Pink at W/ Project Space in New York’s Chinatown. Made from 3inch rigid insulation and mirrored acrylic this temporary and site-specific installation was part of a series that ‘explore the translation of a legible figure into a continuous visual field’.

Well known for adding quality and coherence to the existing urban context of the Netherlands, Europe and the Russian Federation, Erick van Egeraat shares with us the re-positioning of the Coach house where he combines new and old elements of the museum complex. This project serves as an elevated monumental entry to mark a new phase in the transformation of the Drents Museum in Assen, Netherlands. More images and description after the break.

Video: Metous Studio presentation on Barrio de los Paracaidistas

David Lee and Anthony Stahl, founders of Metous Studio and students at California Polytechnic State University, recently presented their Barrio de los Paracaidistas project to the Architecture Department of Cal Poly. Winners of the 2010 Chicago Mock Firm Competition, Lee and Stahl share their design process, collaboration, slides, diagrams and renderings, Q and A session, and why they were motivated to enter the Chicago Mock Firm Competition.

The guiding principle behind Schiavello Architects’ design for the Starfish Square in Tropea, Calabria, Italy was to create a symbolic focal point for the city that could bring social groups together. The project uses a starfish as the base form for the design.

Broadcasting Place / Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios Broadcasting Place is a mixed use development close to Leeds city centre. Conceived as a public/private partnership for property group Downing and Leeds Metropolitan University, it provides approximately 110,000 square feet of new offices and teaching spaces together with 240 student residences in a landmark building rising to 23 storeys. A few months ago I came across an interesting project by Geoff Manaugh of BLDGBLOG. He did a post entitled “Bloggers in the Archive”. The concept is so simple and obvious, but it struck a chord with me. The best ideas are like this.

He spent a couple months rummaging through the collection at the Canadian Center for Architecture as part of their visiting scholars program. His goal was to expose many of the artifacts that are hidden away in the collection.

The ambitious and successful award-winning architect, MAA Christian Bay-Jorgensen, from the architectural firm, Bay Arch, shared with us this unique and sustainable building at the harbour in Boston, Massachusetts. With affiliates in Ringkobing and Copenhagen and with creativity and energy in the blood, Boston Fusion will contain apartments and offices to create a new, green design in every sense with the help of eco-friendly materials from Icopal. DSBA, Mihai CARCIUN and upgrade.studio have been declared winners of the Taiwan Tower Conceptual Design Compeition with a design proposal that encompasses the symbolism of Taichung as a city. The team conceptualized a structure for Taichung that would activate the local culture in a design that also stands as a landmark for the city and as a campaign for diligent and responsible design.

The 60th AIA Seattle Honor Awards for Washington Architecture were moderated by Nathaniel Kahn, director of My Architect, and juried by Jim Jennings AIA (San Francisco), Sheila O’Donnell Hon. FAIA (Dublin), and Gilles Saucler FRAIC (Montreal).

The historic Moore Theatre played host to the event which focused on four words to define this year’s submittal categories: visionary, measurable, econimical and tectonic.  There were over 170 submissions and 13 awarded projects.

The d3 Housing Tomorrow competition invites architects, designers, engineers, and students to collectively explore, document, analyze, transform, and deploy innovative approaches to residential urbanism, architecture, interiors, and designed objects.

The goal for the design of a model arts village in Ghana, Africa was to be easily built from local materials and local labor at a low cost with a budget of $42,000-$62,000. For final year students, Mihai Dorcu, Stefan Padurariu and Vlad Burlacu, their challenge was to provide a comfortable and multi-use space for the international arts community in the rural part of the country. They would go on to achieve this by tapping into local resources for sustainable development to integrate art into architecture for a more sustainable future.
