Architecture Now - Superblock Piraeus

On 5 July the book ‘After Piraeus’ will be launched at a festive gathering in Pakhuis De Zwijger, Amsterdam.

In 1994, the housing block Piraeus was completed to the design of Hans Kollhoff. It was a blow. German architects were needed to demonstrate that a design did not need to be at odds with the Dutch construction culture. Piraeus must be taken as a pivotal point in modern history, after which the thinking on the production of buildings and city were newly charged.

VAA / Summer School

From 15th to 23rd July 2017, a ten-day interfaculty summer school will take place in Vignola (province of Modena) Italy, in a Renaissance palace by Giacomo Barozzi. Art as Labour : Build & Design Summer School in Nikola-Lenivets

We invite young architects, artists and students to take part in a Global Practice Unit international summer school, organized this summer at Nikola-Lenivets Art Park in Russia.

World-famous artists and architects will lead the process, inluding Nikolay-Polissky, the founder of the Nikola-Lenivets park, who revived the local rural community through art, and Alexandr Brodsky, painter and architect, as well as teachers from the Umea School of Architecture (Sweden), Limerick School of Architecture (Ireland), Oxford Brooks University (UK), and MARCH (Russia). The summer school will explore how art can generate and support communities and create an architectural intervention in the Park in response to this challenge.

IAAC Barcelona Summer Workshops

The BCN Summer Workshops is a revolutionary program by IAAC, designed to connect some of the most pioneering minds of Barcelona with like-minded creatives from all around the world. Our 4-day workshops will take place in the Valldaura Estate, located inside the Collserola Natural Park, 30 minutes away from Barcelona. The program will start on July 24th with an inaugural speech from the world-acclaimed chef, Ferran Adriá (date TBC).

The Chinese Culture University, Taiwan, in collaboration with the municipality of Maccagno con Pino e Veddasca, Italy, is offering to a limited number of architecture and landscape architecture students the opportunity to take part in a twelve-day design workshop in Maccagno, organized by the Landscape Architecture Department, College of Environmental Design, the Chinese Culture University as part of the CCU summer 2017 workshops program.

Open Call for a Swiss Room in Seoul

A Swiss Room to Showcase Lausanne’s Candidature to organize the 28th UIA Congress.

The challenge posed by this competition is to design a place object which encapsulates the ideas behind the topic of “Architecture and Water”. It involves creating a place to showcase Lausanne’s Candidature which offers an intuitive approach to the multiple ramifications of this topic. It should, effectively, act as a laboratory of ideas. This place-object must be able to house a table and 4 chairs for discussions, presentation of the candidature, etc. It will be located in the hall of the Convention center in Seoul.

Call for entries: Concorso Bergamo Centro Piacentiniano

The European two phases Urban Design Competition promoted by the Municipality of Bergamo will transform the centre of the Lower City asking Italian and international designers proposals to overhaul open areas, public squares and spaces and new functions for the discarded buildings.

It asks for participants with multidisciplinary skills and aims at strengthening the role of the Piacentiniano system as the identity generator of the city centre, exploiting urban spaces, reviving commercial activities, re-using existing buildings, promoting social and cultural events and improving the accessibility of the area.

Urban SOS: Hour City

Presented by AECOM and Van Alen Institute, with 100 Resilient Cities — Pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation, hOUR City is this year’s Urban SOS™ student ideas competition. We’re asking students to propose new solutions to tackle housing, transportation, or economic development challenges and to re-imagine what a future “hour city” boundary can be.

Call for Proposals: HOLEŠOVICE–KARLÍN FOOTBRIDGE

The Footbridge Holešovice - Karlín International Design Competition should bring an architectural and structural design proposal for a pedestrian bridge across the Vltava River. This bridge will connect the riverbanks of Karlín, Holešovice and the Štvanice Island. Up to this day the Prague districts Karlín and Holešovice suffer from the lack of good pedestrian and cycling connection.

The Paphos Beach Shelter Competition is open to architects, students of architecture, recent graduates, and associated disciplines from around the world, during the European Capital of Culture - Paphos 2017.

BCA International BIM Competition 2017

The competition is to develop a concept design of an academic building as a redevelopment project to replace the Block D & E-Canteen Block to support the expanding educational activities in BCA Academy. The new building block should be able to host a minimum 3,000 students’ capacity with a maximum 23,500sqm Gross Floor Area (GFA) including usable space, public circulation and service area.

Call for Papers Chicago Schools: Authors, Audiences and History

“Chicago Schools” is an international peer-reviewed graduate student symposium that explores the interplay between the individual and collective in the process of making history. The symposium, hosted by the IIT College of Architecture PhD Program in partnership with the Chicago Architecture Biennial, will engage with and enhance the dialogue around the Biennial theme, “Make New History,” by highlighting graduate student contributions in architecture, design, humanities, and architectural and urban history. Papers may revisit past and present Chicago Schools - from Henry van Brunt’s "School" and William James’ "Chicago School of Thought" to Sigfried Giedion’s "Chicago School of Architecture,” and beyond - as well as the emergence of new historiographic and architectural traditions within a global context.
