Architects in Conversation: Preston Scott Cohen and Stan Allen, FAIA

Architect Preston Scott Cohen, Professor and Chair of Architecture at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, speaks about projects in Asia and his design for the Tel Aviv Museum of Art’s celebrated Lightfall with architect, educator and National Academician Stan Allen. ‘Colombia: Transformed/Architecture=Politics’ is an exhibition currently taking place at the Center for Architecture. In relation to the exhibition, Colombian architect Giancarlo Mazzanti will be giving a lecture on architecture for social inclusion, Friday, October 11 at 8:30am.

2013 Architecture & Design Film Festival

During the city’s most important moment for architecture and design (Archtober), the fifth annual Architecture & Design Film Festival will return to Tribeca Cinemas with its most ambitious and exciting program to date. Over the course of five days (October 16-20), the festival will screen 25 feature-length and short films from all over the world exploring various themes of art, architecture, design, urban planning, and more. In addition to the curated selection of films, ADFF will present a series of intimate discussions with architects, designers, industry leaders and filmmakers as well as three panel discussions. On Saturday afternoon, Wanted Design will curate a panel on gentrification in Brooklyn. The two Sunday panels are about historic preservation and Russian modernism.

Exhibition: OFIS_open_files

From October 5, visitors to the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery can look forward to the new exhibition called OFIS_open_files which will introduce the creations of the architectural office from Slovenia.

Adaptive Architecture ACADIA 2013

ADAPTIVE ARCHITECTURE ACADIA 2013 will present world-leading research in contemporary architectural design. ACADIA 2013 is the 36th annual conference of the Association for Computer-Aided Design in Architecture, presented at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Oct. 24-26 with workshops running Oct. 19-23 and 27. The event includes presentations by international researchers, a series of exhibitions, a suite of publications and specialized workshops on advanced design methods, fabrication and simulation.

Dallas Architecture Forum Announces Its 2013-2014 Lecture Season

Dallas Architecture Forum, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing challenging and on-going public discourse about architecture, design and the urban environment, is pleased to announce its 2013-14 season of lectures that will begin with award-winning Korean architect and the founder of Mass Studies, Minsuk Cho, who will speak Thursday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. at The Magnolia Theater, 3699 McKinney Ave. Other speakers for this season include Hugh Broughton, Jose Selgas and Lucia Cano, Larry Scarpa, and Gregg Jones.

"The Architecture of Regionalism in the Age of Globalization" Symposium

Clemson School of Architecture will host a symposium on "The Architecture of Regionalism in the Age of Globalization", with Alexander Tzonis, Liane Lefaivre, Marlon Blackwell, Merrill Elam, and Frank Harmon, on Friday, October 18, 2013. The symposium celebrates the school's centennial.

Spotlight on Design: Toyo Ito

The innovative work of the 2013 Pritzker Prize Laureate Toyo Ito is often driven by an internal critique and struggle towards perfection. In this translated program, the principal of Toyo Ito & Associates, Architects will discuss his design philosophy and remarkable work, which includes the Sendai Mediatheque in Miyagi, Japan, and Tokyo's Tama Art University Library and TOD’S Omotesando Building.

Arkimeet 2013: Architects meet in Istanbul

Arkitera Architecture Center is an independent architecture center that has been dedicated to sustain a better architectural practice, enhance the architectural culture and to raise the architectural quality in Turkey.

ARKIMEET, one of the brands created by Arkitera Architectural Center, is developed as the most significant meeting platform among the architects in Turkey. With the motto "ARCHITECTS MEET in ISTANBUL", the event will comprise national and international conferences, panels and award ceremonies to honor individuals and institutions which contribute to the improvement of the urban quality. In addition to these activities and awards, it is aimed to provide opportunities to establish one-to-one connections among the participants and providing appropriate meeting occasions.

Archtober 2013: Architecture and Design Month in NY

The American Institute of Architects New York Chapter and the Center for Architecture have announced new and expanded programs for the third annual edition of Archtober, the official New York City Architecture and Design Month.

More than 50 participating groups, from the Guggenheim to the Museum of Modern Art have curated more than 150 programs, including exhibits, movies, talks, and walking tours. As Rick Bell, Executive Director of the AIA New York said today during the press preview: "There is something for everyone".

Presented by the University of Maryland's School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, the 'Conflict and Convergence: Urban Informality in Latin America' Symposium aims to explore how recent experiences in cities such as Medellín, Bogotá, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Caracas, among others, can serve as examples for multidisciplinary models to urban and social revitalization in other parts of the world. Taking place October 4th at 5:00pm until October 5th at 10:00am, the event will bring together participants representing a wide spectrum of disciplines and seeks to generate a conversation between professionals and academics to analyze the goals, methods, achievements and opportunities in Latin America. Le Corbusier and Brutalism Exhibition

Opening October 11th to mark the re-opening of the J1 Maritime Hangar, Marseille-Provence 2013, European Capital of Culture, is presenting the Le Corbusier and Brutalism Exhibition in celebration of one of the most esteemed architects of the 20th century. The exhibition emphasizes the different facets of this unique artist-architect who along with his design work also pursued drawing, urbanism, painting, and sculpture.

Curated by Jacques Sbriglio, the renowned Marseille architect and realized in collaboration with the Fondation Le Corbusier, Le Corbusier and Brutalism covers the period from 1935 to 1965. It presents more than 250 of the architect’s works: 133 original blueprints, 54 drawings and sketches, 33 paintings, 14 sculptures, 10 enamels, 4 tapestries, and 19 architectural models, as well as close to 100 photographs taken at Le Corbusier’s building sites. 'Futures in the Making' Exhibition

Opening October 4, The Architecture Foundation in London is delighted to present 'Futures in the Making,' a group exhibition showcasing prospective architectural futures explored in the work of recent architecture graduates. From spectacular pollution capturing facades to innovative agrarian settlements, projects will include a global range of case studies that test new ideas for architecture and infrastructure by a rising generation of architectural talent. AIA Women’s Leadership Summit 2013

Taking place October 24-26 at the Phoenix Art Museum, the AIA Women’s Leadership Summit 2013 consists of a 2-day, 5 to 6 session event that gathers voices of architects serving in various leadership roles, including, principals, educators, owners, designers, environmentalists and innovators, in an intimate setting to discuss the challenges and opportunities for women practicing architecture today. 'Practical Utopias' Exhibition

Taking place at The Center for Architecture in New York, 'Practical Utopias' presents a body of recent work by American and other international firms in five cities across East Asia. Conceived as extensions or embellishments of existing capitals of finance and culture, these new cities within cities serve as focal points for future visions and global ambitions. Over the past twenty years the pace and scale of urbanization in Asia has been unprecedented in both the emerging and maturing economies of the region. Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam 2013

The 2013 Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR), which focuses around the theme, 'Time Machine,' is set to take place in the cinemas of LantarenVenster October 10-13. The event will all be about evaluating the past and dreaming about the future. This will be done with movies, lots of movies, in which 'the world called city' is the leading character.
