This two-day symposium is co-sponsored with the MIT 2016 Committee and the MIT Department of Architecture. It will examine architecture and cultures at MIT and their influences on education and student life on campus. Speakers, including David Adjaye and Hashim Sarkis, will explore the prescient design of the original buildings and the interdisciplinary, innovative research that they fomented, as well as imagine the teaching and maker spaces of the future.

The aim of the Sleeping competition is to develop design proposals for the hotel typology – a place to sleep. It is asked to the participants to create innovative and unconventional projects on this theme, questioning the very basis of the notion of hotel. Recently many initiatives, such as Airbnb and Couch-surfing, have been proposing new interpretations of the function of hotels, developing extremely successful business models. With similar creative attitude the participants are urged to create an artefact, merging considerable programmatic innovation and valuable design tools. The proposal can be a device, a piece of furniture, an interior design project, a pavilion, a building or a urban plan. Scale of intervention, program dimensions and location are not given and they can be arranged by the participants to better suit their project.

Vietnam and Cambodia, countries with dynamic economies and young populations, possess a rich and wide-ranging architectural heritage. This SAH Field Seminar will explore the fascinating architectural landscape of Vietnam, focusing in particular on the modern era from the nineteenth century to today. In addition, participants will visit the spectacular Angkor complex in Cambodia, capital of the Khmer empire from the ninth to fifteenth century.

The Albertina is one of the most prominent collections in the world with over one million works covering six centuries of art history, from the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance to the present day. Its world famous Graphic Collection, rich in tradition, is by far the largest and most important department. The Architecture Collection of the Albertina is by no means less significant. It too spans across many periods, encompassing works by well-known architects. The exhibition in the Berlin Museum for Architectural Drawing allows a glimpse into this fantastic collection, showing hand drawn architecture across a wide spectrum with sketches, studies, vedute and project presentations by exceptional artists and architects such as Antonio Pisanello (1395–1455), Francesco Borromini (1599–1667), Hubert Robert (1733–1808), Egon Schiele (1890–1918), Hans Hollein (1934–2014) and Zaha Hadid (born 1950).

BSA Space, Boston’s only center for architecture and design, seeks curatorial proposals for its 2018—2019 exhibition season. The deadline to submit is Friday, April 15, 2016.

BSA Space features over 7,000 square feet of gallery space for creative explorations of the potential for design to engage community, inspire vision, and to provoke positive change. BSA Space is home to the Boston Society of Architects/AIA (BSA) and the BSA Foundation (Foundation). BSA Space produces exhibitions and programs that unite the public and the design profession in a common understanding of the aesthetic, economic, and social impact of architecture, design, and the built environment on Greater Boston and the wider world.

A Japanese Constellation: Toyo Ito, SANAA, and Beyond focuses on the work of architects and designers orbiting Pritzker Prize winners Toyo Ito and SANAA. MoMA’s first presentation dedicated solely to Japanese practitioners, the exhibition spotlights a small cluster of contemporary Japanese architects working within the larger field, exploring their formal inventiveness and close professional relationships to frame a radical model of practice in the 21st century.

The EDP Foundation has announced that MAAT, the Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology in Lisbon, will open to the public on October 4-5. The museum, with a new kunsthall building designed by AL_A, will “become the centerpiece of one of the Portuguese capital’s most popular cultural areas, the historic riverside district of Belém."

Pedro Gadanho, who previously held a role as a curator in the Department of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, has been appointed the first Director of MAAT.

Investigate the relationship between landscape architecture and visual arts and explore how to use landscape architecture to teach interdisciplinary lessons. Discover the work of landscape architecture firm Oehme, van Sweden & Associates in the exhibition The New American Garden, visit a nearby site designed by the firm, and create a photographic artwork of your own.

Alan Ward, FASLA, masterfully uses the photographic process to see and interpret the essence of designed landscapes. In this program, he describes his process for capturing space, texture, bright light, and dappled shade in mostly black-and-white images, challenging us to see landscapes with new eyes. Re-Ball! is an open design competition to turn 650,000 3-inch, white, translucent plastic balls into a site-specific installation in the Dupont Underground’s 14,000-square-foot east platform. The balls were previously part of the National Building Museum’s blockbuster summer destination The BEACH. This project is part of a concerted effort to create a more vibrant and integrated urban environment on our main streets. Significant investment is being done to improve the streets and sidewalks and the City wishes to expand upon this work by implementing a façade improvement program. Dexter Street is an excellent example of a vibrant urban “Main Street,” with many successful businesses and delicious restaurants. The City believes that these façade improvements will have the opportunity to take the street “over the top” and pave the path toward a successful attraction for neighboring communities and tourists, in addition to improving the experience for residents.
