Arquitectura en Corto invites you to the screening of Gypsum Concrete, taking place on Wednesday, September 24, at 7:00 PM at Espacio Arquia in Madrid (C/ Tutor, 16). Directed by Simon Pénochet, the short film documents the research conducted by the French architecture firm Ciguë to transform demolition waste from a construction site on the outskirts of Paris into material for a new building being constructed on the same plot. The project proposes manufacturing concrete for floor slabs using recycled aggregates and gypsum as a binder—a material recyclable through urban mining processes that is available in large quantities throughout the Paris region. The film explains how testing validates the material for this application and concludes that using gypsum instead of cement reduces CO2 emissions by up to four times. In Spain, several projects have already been completed where materials found in situ were repurposed as resources for new construction. Following the screening, Héctor Fernández Elorza (hfe arquitectos) and Josep Ricart (HARQUITECTES) will discuss the topic and present examples of their small- and large-scale interventions—ranging from single-family homes to urban public spaces—where material reuse has been a core project strategy.

The IED Research and Innovation Center (CRIED) and the company YVY Reciclagem launched a promising joint project. In April of this year, with the support of Enel Distribuição São Paulo, they established the IED LAB MOB | YVY, an innovative laboratory that combines furniture design, the circular economy, and entrepreneurship to generate new opportunities for developing furniture from a new raw material: recycled wood from utility pole crossarms in the state of São Paulo.

This event, promoted by TRACE and Somos Lares, will take place on September 12 at the Teatro da Unisinos (Av. Dr. Nilo Peçanha, 1600). Co-hosted by the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Planning and Natural Resources, the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism, and the Yangpu District People’s Government, this year’s edition continues to explore urban space themes against the backdrop of Shanghai’s ongoing urban renewal. The event is curated by Fram Kitagawa, the founder and artistic director of Japan’s Echigo-Tsumari Art Field and the Setouchi Triennale. Yoshiyuki Kawazoe, an associate professor at the University of Tokyo and an architect, serves as the curator for the Space Art section, while Professor Ruan Xin, founding dean of the School of Design at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, serves as the curator for the Planning and Architecture section. Zhang Ming, professor and deputy head of the Department of Architecture at Tongji University’s College of Architecture and Urban Planning, serves as the chief architect for the Art Season.

Casa FOA, the national architecture, interior design, landscaping, and industry exhibition, returns to the province of Buenos Aires after 11 years. Hosted at the Círculo de Olivos, the 36th edition will open its doors to the public from September 13 to October 20, marking its return to the Buenos Aires region for the first time since 2008, when Casa FOA dazzled at the Puerto de Frutos in Tigre.
