Book launch of Gustavo Penna 73/83

On August 23 at 7:00 PM, at IAB SP, the project Gustavo Penna 73/23 – 50 Years of Architecture, Design, and Word will launch the first volume of a five-book collection to be produced through 2023. Titled Gustavo Penna 73/83, the book covers the architect’s first decade of work, including their mentors, professional colleagues, and the early years of the firm, assembling a vast chronological puzzle.

    This documentary focuses on the practices of young studios from the post-financial crisis generation. These architects were forced to rethink their approach to the profession, leading them to not only carve out a space for their architectural work but also to gain significant visibility. This shift stems from the construction of a distinct identity based on production that highlights local values—both material and human—and is defined by the social, economic, and environmental consciousness they bring to their projects.

    Ruth Estévez is a curator and writer. She earned her Master’s degree in Art History from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (2001–2003) and is a PhD candidate in Art and Education at UCLM in Spain. She is currently a Senior Curator at the Rose Art Museum in Boston, where she oversees its exhibition and collection program. In 2019, she was appointed co-curator of the 34th São Paulo Biennial in Brazil. Since 2018, she has organized “Idiorritmias,” the performance program at MACBA in Barcelona.

    Of Ingenuity and Oblivion: Urban Devices for Scientific Experimentation

      Olinka. The Ideal City of Dr. Atl. Presented by Cuauhtémoc Medina

      This work is the result of extensive research by Cuauhtémoc Medina on Olinka, a city designed to bring together scientists and artists from around the world to work free from political or social pressures—undoubtedly one of Dr. Atl’s most ambitious, yet least known, projects. The book features reproductions of documents, photographs, and plans, many of which are previously unpublished, illustrating the history of this project.

      Vkhutemas & Bauhaus: Space, Volume, Design, and Colors

      The workshop focuses on executing numerous foundational exercises proposed by masters from the Soviet "Vkhutemas" school and the German "Bauhaus." These exercises, which were part of introductory curricula, involve sensory experiments regarding volume, space, form, and color theory, featuring masters such as Nikolai Ladovsky, László Moholy-Nagy, Lyubov Popova, Lyudmila Mayakovskaya, Johannes Itten, among others. Each session will feature two masters and their respective foundational experimental proposals.
