In the new Urban and Building Code of the City of Buenos Aires, approved by the Legislature in late 2018, new strategies are presented for the city's planned growth and densification. One of the code's most notable elements, which this article reflects upon, enables the development of apartments with a new minimum floor area established at 21 square meters. The supposed affordability of these minimum micro-units seeks, under a political agenda, to double the urban population in the near future, betting on a densification that would increase the city's population from 3 million to 6 million inhabitants.

From June 11 to July 29, the fourth of six calls for entries for the International Ideas Competition for Expo 2023 is open. This call, open to all architects wishing to participate, involves the design of the Antenna and Lookout, which will be located on the site's central boulevard.

“International Pavilions” is the third of six international ideas competitions for the construction of the Expo 2023 buildings, which were awarded to Argentina following a vote at the General Assembly of the BIE (Bureau International des Expositions).

From May 28 to July 15, the second of six calls for entries for the International Ideas Competition for Expo 2023 is open. Open to all architecture professionals, this submission phase focuses on the design and renovation of the existing Mini-Stadium and International Pavilion.

Through June 9, 2019, Fundación PROA will host the exhibition "Design in Action. Contemporary Intersections." Curated by Martín Huberman, Olga Martínez, and María Laura Carrascal, the exhibition reflects on the presence of design in daily life, highlighting the multiplicity of aesthetics, viewpoints, and vital, substantial themes that reveal themselves and coexist in our present.
The selected projects cover three categories: Objects, Urbanism, and Fashion, questioning current quality of life as a common denominator and reclaiming the regional work of artisans through a contemporary lens.

Discussions of Amancio Williams's architecture typically focus on his built work—the tangible side of his profession. Yet beyond being a great architect, he was a researcher, creator, avant-gardist, and visionary. Constantly studying the technical possibilities of his era, he approached his theoretical development and architectural thinking as if the field were a laboratory.

This is evident in the projects Williams developed for dwellings in space (1942), the hall for plastic spectacle and sound in space (1942), the Buenos Aires airport (1945) the suspended office building (1946) and the first city in Antarctica (1980), which we explore below.

The call for entries for the International Ideas Competition for the new Argentine Pavilion at Expo 2023 is open from May 21 to July 8, and is open to all architecture professionals who wish to participate.

The Argentine Pavilion is the first of six international competitions organized by the Central Society of Architects (SCA) and the College of Architects of the Province of Buenos Aires (CAPBA), and sponsored by the Argentine Federation of Architects' Entities (FADEA), which will be launched over the coming months as part of Expo 2023. The pavilion will represent the federal concept of Argentina, symbolizing and embracing the value of diverse emerging cultural, artistic, technological, and scientific expressions, as well as the country's tourism heritage.

The National Fund for the Arts (Fondo Nacional de las Artes) is calling for entries for the 2019 Heritage Competition. The initiative aims to support processes of valorization and revitalization, establishing the necessary conditions for Argentina's cultural heritage to thrive and yield new results in the future. Submissions will be accepted until Thursday, May 30, 2019.

Siting a building in a city is no easy task. The quest for isolation and privacy within a complex, heterogeneous, and constantly changing urban space creates a dual condition during the design process. How can an urban building offer privacy and openness at the same time? Consequently, there arises a need for various control mechanisms to mediate between exterior and interior spaces, filtering sound, screening views, managing intimacy, and ensuring anonymity without losing the connection to the city.

The recent tragedy that resulted in the partial destruction of the Notre-Dame Cathedral has prompted reflection on the value of our architectural heritage. Stirring events such as this bring highly relevant issues to the fore, inviting us to consider the role of architecture in shaping a city's collective memory.

On May 8, 9, and 10, the second "Urban Rivers: Confluences in the Study, Design, and Management of Fluvial Territories" Research Conference will be held in Buenos Aires. Aimed at faculty, researchers, officials, professionals, and students, this conference seeks to promote interdisciplinary exchange regarding the study, design, and management of fluvial territories in both urban and peri-urban areas.
