6th Millennial Lima Photography Competition: Huacas

This is a special year for creating a new Lima with a memory; that is our decree (and our wish). Now more than ever: Let's reclaim the memory of Lima as a thousand-year-old city.

Amidst the shifting sands of Lima's reality, one of the most solid foundations is the huacas. And this is their year, as they will represent the Peruvian pavilion at the Venice Biennale. For this reason, to elevate and share them with more people, this edition of the 6th Photography Competition by Lima Milenaria focuses exclusively on photographs of these ancient ceremonial centers... huacas everywhere. The winning photographs will have the opportunity to be displayed at the Biennale, among other important prizes.

You don't have to go far to capture a huaca in time; just go for a walk (or dig through your archives). We are surrounded by them, or we live while surrounding them, even if we forget. This is an act to remember, commemorate, and better understand them. What is the relationship between Lima's citizens and the huacas in the city? See them with new eyes—don't just pass by; stop and admire them. So much history, wisdom, mystery, poetry, and reflection... Just don't delay in capturing them; the deadline for submissions is midnight on January 10. Read on to learn how to participate.

Call for Ideas: Global Warming Center

Sea ice in the Arctic region is crucial for maintaining the global climate due to its reflectivity. The melting of this ice can further accelerate global warming due to positive feedback loops, where warming generates more heat as solar absorption increases. The loss of this ice sheet may represent a tipping point in global warming, triggering the 'runaway' effect of climate change.

Quito launches ambitious ideas competition for urban redevelopment around its rail corridor

The Municipality of Quito, through the Metropolitan Institute of Urban Planning (IMPU) and the Pichincha Architects Association (CAE-P), invites architects, urban planners, and other professionals to participate in a competition aimed at the urban renewal of the railway corridor in southern Quito.

This competition seeks to reimagine the corridor, which currently only serves the tourist train, and whose spatial, environmental, economic, and social potential remains untapped. Consequently, the competition encourages the development of proposals that integrate and acknowledge this historic infrastructure within the city, highlighting its potential as an inclusive and connective public space. The goal is to create gathering spaces and incorporate facilities, retail, and services that enhance the current use and character of each sector. Participants may even rethink the role of this corridor for various urban functions, regardless of whether the train remains in operation. The corridor spans approximately 13 kilometers and traverses areas with a significant diversity of dynamics, land uses, and levels of urban consolidation.

Competition launched to rehabilitate the Beti Jai, a historic Basque pelota court in Madrid

The Madrid City Council, in collaboration with the Official College of Architects of Madrid (COAM), has launched a competition for the adaptation and rehabilitation of the historic Beti Jai fronton (always party in Basque) in the Spanish capital.

This former sports facility for Basque pelota, which seats 4,000 spectators, was designed by Joaquín de Rucoba and inaugurated in 1894. It served various purposes after 1918, when it ceased to function exclusively as a sports venue, until it was completely abandoned in 1989. In 2015, the Madrid City Council acquired the site, following concerns over its uncertain future raised by local organizations such as Madrid, Ciudadanía y Patrimonio.
