More about this product

Lunawood is a pioneer in decorative wood solutions, with 25 years of expertise in the thermal modification of wood. Their mission is to reconnect people with nature by bringing the calming essence of the forest into urban environments.

Lunawood ThermoWood® façade panels were applied in a private cabin designed by VÅG LOFOTEN AS, located in Nappstraumen within the Lofoten archipelago, Norway. Completed in 2022, the project is situated in a coastal landscape characterized by strong seasonal variations, salt exposure, and rugged natural surroundings. These conditions informed both the architectural concept and the selection of exterior materials.

Lunawood facade application

For the building envelope, the architects specified the Luna Panel System in three profiles, 19 × 68, 19 × 117, and 19 × 140, installed as exterior cladding across the cabin’s façade. The use of panels with varying widths establishes a rhythmic pattern that is repeated throughout the exterior, contributing to visual variation while maintaining construction consistency.

The building is organized into two wings, one accommodating the kitchen, dining, and living areas, and the other dedicated to bedrooms and bathrooms. The façade facing the road presents a restrained expression, while the side oriented toward the sea opens to views and sunlight, reinforcing the relationship between the interior spaces and the surrounding landscape.

Lunawood facade application

Over time, the untreated ThermoWood® cladding is designed to weather naturally, gradually developing grey tones that align with the colors of the coastal environment. This natural aging process supports the project’s integration with its setting while maintaining dimensional stability under conditions of moisture, temperature variation, and marine exposure.

The façade system demonstrates how exterior wood cladding can be used to create a durable envelope that responds to local climate conditions while contributing to the architectural identity of a building in a remote natural context.
