The Public Safety Answering Center II is the new home for the NYPD and the FDNY 911 emergency call center. The Aluminum Composite Façade in the two-tone colors of “Brushed Aluminum” and “Pewter” is made from over 11,000 ACM pans, erected as 10’ and 11’ tall by 12’ and 16’ long mega panels.
Because of the high-security nature of this building, the challenge in the design was to develop this lightweight cladding system that would meet all the design criteria, and that could be erected as mega panels and be attached to an all-concrete shear-wall construction building covering 225,000 Sq.Ft. of façade.
Unlike the typical Island Façade systems, the waterproofing and insulation were fields applied to the concrete shear wall, and then the façade mega panels were erected with a full roof suspended monorail system that hoisted the panels and the 2-story hanging scaffold for the installation crews. Due to the massive mechanical plenum area and rooftop mechanical enclosures, there was an additional 90,000 Sq.Ft. of corrugated cladding wall systems build in place.
Island’s mega-panel façade panels start as fully-welded steel frames and are wrapped with a proprietary extruded profile, allowing large-format panels to be installed completely weathertight, without the need for scaffolding and caulking. The stainless steel rainscreen panels are unique constructions, they incorporate multiple finishes on single surfaces including precise registration for custom punched screens. Because the building is supported over seven stories of below-grade construction, the exterior facade panels had to account for the complex building movements while maintaining seamless Mega-panel jointing.
