Trends Report: Robotics and Automation for Domestic Life

Throughout the past year, the concepts of Smart Homes (+160% YoY) and Domotics (+450% YoY) have been gaining traction as they define the automation and connectivity between devices found within homes, and which constitute the basic units of the growing Smart Cities concept.

From spying on our pets with cameras, to switching on lighting systems and controlling the temperature of our homes, it is undeniable that technologies associated with Automation (+118% YoY), Robotics (+208% yoY) and Algorithms (+190% YoY) have not just seen a rise in demand (with increasingly accessible prices) but are also being integrated into architecture by complementing technologies that bring comprehensive solutions to increase comfort within our homes through domotics or IoT (Internet of Things) systems.

According to the BERG Insights database, in North America alone over 63 million new homes will qualify as “smart” by 2023. As artificial intelligence advances, “Smart Homes” are expected to not only provide comfort for their residents, but also to learn about their behaviors and eventually anticipate their needs.

How can residential automation be applied to design and construction?

Simple: domotics have ceased to be a luxury add-on, and have become genuine elements to be considered as part of architectural projects. On-site and prefabricated construction systems must now take into consideration the need for special pipelines for these types of circuits (BUS Cables) whilst innovation in materials and product design seek the integration of new technologies.
