“Soplo”, Spanish for “breath”, which breathes life, is the wind that passes smoothly through the openings. It is the shapes that draws the wind on the sand.

This house is located in an extraordinary urban space, it is proposed as a “pavilion open to the landscape”. The back, which coincides with the access, is hermetic, closed by curved walls, inspired by the experience of walking through the sculpture of Richard Serra in Guggenheim Bilbao with my daughter Clara.

The curves are designed in a double system of golden ratios, which give form to the “breath”.

It is a single-family house located at the foot of Manquehue hill in Santiago. It does not require to be considered as a special, or different, architecture, but instead is focused on generating a homogeneous facade with the neighboring house (which belongs to my sister), designed by the national architecture prize winner Luis Izquierdo. Thus, Soplo House takes the lines from Rollan Zegers house, opening a great territorial space to the view.

In the interior, we focus on extreme subtraction, an open space with a double circulation, one in the back, hermetic, and the other through the landscape, which means that no room reaches the facade window. We thereby generate a dynamic space without hierarchies. The dwelling happens in a continuous flow, between interior and exterior, horizontal and vertical, making the 1400 m2 plot become infinite, with multiple possibilities.

The roof is proposed as a fifth facade, covered with a deck and flowers, which contribute to the thermal efficiency of the house. The concept of the garden is that of an agrarian landscape, planted in a system of curved terraces that follow the dialogue of the access walls, flanked by the 25 m pool, designed to swim.

The interiors are designed as sculpture, achieving a dialogue between architecture and sculpture.
