Mass-Customizable Freeform: Technical Challenges Facing 3D Printing

Browsing ArchDaily's 3D printing tag reveals the incredible progress this technology has made over recent years. While once considered a distant, futuristic concept or a tool limited to small-scale objects, 3D printing has matured to produce increasingly complex spaces and even fully printed buildings. More recently, researchers have been experimenting with concrete and other construction materials, though developing a highly efficient 3D printing technology viable for widespread adoption remains a challenge. The 3D-printed pavilion by Huizenprinters serves as a compelling case study.

Launched in 2018, the project initially used concrete to test the current capabilities of 3D printing. According to the team, they knew very little about the technology at the outset; furthermore, the material mix could only be stacked up to 30 centimeters before risking collapse. The collaborative effort brought together construction firm Heilijgers BV, concrete supplier Van der Kamp BV, innovation specialists Blueways, and the creative innovation community De WAR. Additionally, Jelle Feringa and Summum Engineering contributed to the project, providing structural design, parametric modeling, and engineering consulting.
