World Population Concentrated

What would the world’s landscape look like if it were concentrated into one megalopolis?  This graphic analysis illustrates the amount of land required to accommodate all 6.9 billion people based on the densities of cities across the globe.  The differences illuminate the adverse affects of suburban sprawl.

Yep, I’ve made the calculus for Paris, 6.900.000 world inhabitants divided by 21.000 ppl/sqkm² in the Paris municipality = 258.000. Which is the figure in the map.

And Paris is dense like 21.000 ppl/sqkm² while the whole parisian urban area (“unité urbaine” in french) is 3.500 ppl/sqkm² if I recall correctly. Two million people live in the municipality of Paris, but more than ten in the urban area. So, having good figures depicting Paris means using figures of the urban area.

So… Well… The figures and the maps used in this picture do not really make sense.

Anyway, the urban area of Paris remains three or four times more dense than the Houston one… ;)

I didn’t realise the world map looked so much like North America… ;)

But seriously, thanks for the article. It is an interesting representation.
