The public space proposal for the Urban Intervention competition creates a new way of creating a dialog between the park and the city. Designed by PRAUD, each solid and void creates its own topography, and thus the topography of the solid provides different experiences for pedestrians and joggers, while topography of the voids provide different types of functions and landscape fields. USA Today has put together a list of city neighborhoods which are satiated with activity, areas which offer a “great slice of urban life.” These districts trend from the urban vicinity to its very core, each in itself exemplifying the revitalization of the American city. The list includes regions which have been influenced by deliberate urban revitalization projects, such as High Line Park in Chelsea; while other neighborhoods have experienced an influx of a younger populace which has contributed to its growth, such as Lawrenceville in Pittsburgh.

The Pacific Northwest is renowned for its integration of craft into all things built: from the finest home to the fuselage of the Dreamliner. How does this resource influence our design process? Is our romance with craft constraining our approach to design, or is it a unique platform for innovation that will help us respond to new demands on the built environment? How can we position our command of craft to transform the design and building process? Can we drive design expertise more deeply into the process of making buildings?
