Alohana is a company based in Portugal. We specialize in zero-waste, future-driven, nature based materials for the construction and design industry. Currently at 80% we believe in a future of construction made 100% from agricultural waste (plant fibres and soil). This competition is for our next project. We choose the top 3 designs in 5 categories (white/coloured 1-storey buildings, white/coloured 2-storey building, brick 1-storey buildings, brick 2-storey buildings, plyscraper complexes). Key elements for all designs are: energy-efficiency, use-efficiency, combat Sick Building Syndrome, comfort, and sustainable modular design. All designs are welcome since one of the objectives is to show how homes and neighbourhoods with our materials do not differ from traditional buildings in design. Only in comfort, health, and wellbeing. Designs inspired by Portuguese building styles are prefered.

People are living longer than ever before, as a result an aging population is struggling to find a place to live out their golden years. While there are of course often concerns about healthcare and support, there are a huge number of factors that affect older generations that aren’t always considered. Many in the older generation struggle to adapt to the changes in their lifestyle. They’re not able to do everything they used to, they’re not working or interacting with their community as much, and of course many will be dealing with the loss of loved ones.
Design interventions into pre-existing sites play a critical role in global healthcare. The 2023 Epidemic Urbanism Initiative Design Competition will focus on adaptive reuse, inviting submissions that consider how pre-existing vacant, underused, or currently used sites, structures, and spaces can be transformed into healthcare settings with thoughtful, sustainable design interventions. Many communities rely on the adaptive reuse of spaces designated or constructed for other purposes to fulfill community healthcare needs, whether it is a former school repurposed as a vaccination clinic in western Canada, a house converted into a women’s health center in Kenya, or a field transformed into a temporary hospital comprised of tents and outbuildings in Bolivia. Global health crises, including the recent COVID-19 pandemic, create an urgent need to transform existing buildings and sites for both ongoing community care and emergency treatment. This adaptive reuse is the theme of the 2023 EUI Design Competition.
NAPOLI SUPER MODERN Everyone seems ‘to know’ Naples, even those who have never been there: its setting, its sounds, its people, its tastes, its informality and, not least, its stories, shaped by the fervour with which the inhabitants live this city. As numerous as these narratives are reproduced in literature, music, or film, countless stories about eras, styles, and uses also overlap in the city's architecture. To avoid being drawn in by stereotypes, guides are needed to decipher this delightful cacophony.
Are you thinking about the impact of climate change through your design actions? Are you considering how your work impacts the planet at large? Are you innovating with healthier materials? Are you passionate about making your designs inclusive? The impacts of your design decisions are far-reaching, indisputable, and can be transformative.
