Submission to The HOME Competition 2019 - Blake Minster
How do we define “home”? Although ideas about our homes are constantly being rethought, the careful examination of “home” has recently come to the attention of architects and nonarchitects alike. We’ve all had to confront our perspective of “home” as we have adapted workplaces, social gatherings, fitness routines, and everyday life in recent months. Not only do we now internalize a home, but we now look at how our homes can connect to the rest of the outside world.
For the past three years, The HOME Competition has challenged architects to rethink the “home”. Through the ages, architects have continuously investigated the role that homes play in our lives, like Peter Eisenman’s House VI or Kurokawa’s Nagakin Capsule Tower. Today, it may be more important than ever to consider the modern role that a “home” must play and the inherent connection that exists between a “home” and its residents.

"Off with her head!", 1867, by Sir John Tenniel, Royal Academy of Arts Collection
“Curiouser and curiouser,” exclaims Alice, as she arrives in Lewis Carroll’s surreal world of the nonsensical, the absurd, and the beautiful. This year, in 2020, from August-October, The Night Gallery will screen three works in three locations in Chicago’s south and west sides: North Lawndale, Hyde Park, and Bridgeport. We are seeking film, video, animation and other works to be exhibited on the topic of Wonderland. Wonderland seeks works which re-imagine existing cultural, sociological, or personal environments through the lens of wonder—foregrounding the mystical, the weird, and the divine. Projects may, for example, reframe systemically racist narratives of “urban blight” in favor of the complex ecologies of city dreams. In a world where oppressive systems seek to produce a single hegemonic reality which foreclose on alternate futures, Wonderland features works by architects, designers, filmmakers, and other creatives which use cinematic techniques to elude monolithic understandings of the world we live in.

The most basic, uncontroversial manifestation of beauty is the beauty of the natural world. Nature is the canvas on which geology, climate, time and science have painted all kinds of vistas and landscapes. Most surreal and dramatic imaginations of man are found to be already existing in the natural ecosystem. The Wave is one such surreal looking sandstone rock formation on the slopes of Coyote Buttes in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness near the Arizona-Utah border.

“The Urban Rhetoric” is a bi-annual initiative by Innovature Research and Design Studio [IRDS] to create a platform for discussion and act as a catalyst in recreating the future of urbanism and urban development in India. We aim to do so with the help of an academic magazine with essays that inspire the agenda for future urbanism. A city is not just defined by the planners and architects that build it, but also by the users that occupy it. Thus, through this initiative, we strive to make these parallels meet by reinforcing the interactions between decision-makers and users. This prospective magazine crusading towards the agenda for future urbanism aims to provide a platform for dialogue and discussions on growth and development in Indian cities.
