Based in Bologna, Italy, SOS—School of Sustainability—is an initiative by Mario Cucinella focused on training emerging professionals in the field of sustainability. The school is open to recent graduates and industry partners to develop innovative projects with a positive impact on society, the economy and the environment through a revolutionary model of integrated education, practice and research. It is a creative laboratory born in close collaboration with Mario Cucinella Architects (MCA), in which training is inspired by active projects and expertise in a professional practice setting.

As a culture, we spend 90 percent of our time indoors. Architecture sustains our way of life; it supports our very being; it defines our life experience. But it also connects us to the world outside of our windows and doors. However, certain geographical locations provide challenges when it comes to designing spaces that foster interaction between inside and out. While some architects may work around these conditions, Peter Brachvogel, AIA, and Stella Carosso—principals of the Pacific Northwest architectural and urban design firm BC&J—have been known to utilize the local habitat within their design.

Architectural Adventures, a travel program from the American Institute of Architects (AIA), is the premier travel provider for architecture, art, and photography enthusiasts, as well as intellectually curious travelers. The program offers a variety of small-group tours specializing in the exploration and appreciation of some of the world’s most remarkable architecture, all while enjoying a destination’s culture, food, and traditions.

SCI-Arc EDGE, Center for Advanced Studies in Architecture, will be graduating its first students at the end of this summer. All four postgraduate programs are currently in the final semester of the three-semester sequence and students are busy wrapping up their final projects.

To keep up with industry trends and important court decisions, every 10 years the AIA core set of contracts are reviewed and updated. The newly revised set of AIA contracts and forms were released April 2017. Major changes include a single Sustainable Project Exhibit that can be added to any AIA document to address the risks and responsibilities associated with sustainable projects; document title changes; new agreements containing a fill point to prompt the parties to discuss and insert an appropriate “termination fee” for terminations for convenience; and an added evaluation provision by the architect if the contractor proposes an alternative means and methods.

Saint-Gobain’s new corporate headquarters campus in Malvern, PA—the North American home to the world’s largest building materials company—is not a typical corporate campus. As the company approached its 350th anniversary, they set out to build a headquarters that would offer a dynamic showcase for its products.

The company assembled a team of designers from two firms—Bernardon and Jacobs—to transform a long-dormant site consisting of two office buildings into an integrated, world-class headquarters located in the suburbs of Philadelphia.
