At the dawn of photography the city could only be recorded as a virtually empty stage by a camera lens too slow to fix for posterity the vitality of urban life.  Even before the new art of photography – literally writing with light – was announced in 1839 in Paris, the City of Light, Daguerre had pioneered street photography by capturing a view of the Boulevard du Temple through the double aperture of his window and his camera lens.  This first urban daguerreotype. captured perfectly the city’s architecture, but this man soon to be famous for portraiture left us scarcely a trace of the bustling traffic of that spring 1838 morning, all human presence was vanquished, save a blurry pair of men, a shoe shiner and a customer, who remained still long enough to be captured as a smudge on the otherwise pristine scene.  By the end of the century the camera was able to capture motion even below the threshold of human perception, making it a tool for the scientific study of human and animal locomotion.

On July 6 at 7:00 PM, the book "Brasil de dentro – Heartland Brazil" by photographer Elaine Eiger will be launched. The event will feature a discussion with the author and guests Adélia Borges, José Marconi Bezerra de Souza, and Fernando Serapião.

To mark the opening of the exhibition, architects Bettina Götz and Richard Manahl of the Austrian firm ARTEC, along with architect and Professor of Architectural Theory and History Josep Maria Montaner, will deliver an inaugural talk on Thursday, July 15, at 5:00 PM, followed by an open discussion with the speakers.

“1972 | Cities for Downtown Santiago” is a curatorial cycle by barco, produced in collaboration with Uruguayan researcher and architect Carolina Tobler. It seeks to develop and critically examine a significant episode in Chilean architecture that marks the end of a specific way of thinking about and creating the city: the 1972 Competition for the Remodeling of Downtown Santiago. The cycle includes a physical exhibition, three virtual conversations, and an academic workshop held within the UC Master of Urban Project program.

The Faculty of Architecture and Design at Universidad Finis Terrae (Chile) is organizing the online seminar "Tools for Researching Contemporary Architecture," which will be led by the distinguished professor Milla Hernández Pezzi, a tenured professor in the Department of Architectural Composition at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (ETSAM).

Taller Ciudad focuses on understanding and analyzing the city through various eras and perspectives. We will review and discuss texts by Italo Calvino, Hannah Arendt, Jane Jacobs, and Juan Villoro. We will explore the city, identify management tools, and use them to develop a completely new digital intervention proposal.

The "Unwhitening the City" course offers a space to explore urban production through a multiterritorial and intersectional lens. It is shaped by debates on territory, culture, and language formulated by the African diaspora and Black epistemologies, aiming to contribute to a critical perspective within urban studies. This course is an extension of projects developed by Coletiva Terra Preta.

New award to recognize projects and initiatives that improve walking conditions in Brazilian cities
The first edition of the Walkable City Award, organized by SampaPé! with the support of ITDP Brazil and Walk21, will reward and highlight public sector efforts to improve walkability in Brazilian cities in recent years.

The mayor of Mariupol (Ukraine) is inviting local and international architects, urbanists, landscape architects and interdisciplinary teams to put forward a bold and contemporary design framework for the reconstruction of the Mariupol Central Shore, a centrally located territory stretching for 2.75 kilometers along the Sea of Azov, with total area of 38 ha.

Sustainability in architecture addresses the negative environmental and social impacts of buildings by utilizing design methods, materials, energy, and development spaces that are not detrimental to the surrounding ecosystem or communities. The philosophy is to ensure that the actions taken today do not have a negative consequence for future generations and comply with the principles of social, economic, and ecological sustainability.

workshops, feasts and a growing exhibition exploring the world
of drawing between the real and the imagined.

The NUS M.Arch Show 2021 showcases the thesis projects of the graduating Master of Architecture students from the National University of Singapore; a collection of bold questions and propositions displaying the expertise obtained in architectural education. A year-long undertaking, the thesis is an arduous yet joyful journey, where conversations, critiques and references gently nudge students towards certain contemporary and relevant trajectories, organically converging into communities of practice where the works collectively resonate with one another. Convergence occurs along five discursive threads, which form the five clusters of the show: “Critical Architecture”, “History & Heritage”, “Sociopolitics & Geopolitics”, “Technologies” and “Urbanism & Environments”. Each cluster is uniquely positioned to probe the limits of the discipline, and to respond to the demands of wider society.

Neuro-architecture transmits knowledge and technologies from the field of neuroscience into the professions of spatial design, aimed to get better informed design solutions to promote human and non-human well-being in our public spaces. We kick off with the key-findings of our 2-year research project Sensing Streetscapes, followed by a roundtable exploration with the global pioneers from Neuro-architecture. What is the state of affairs and what is the potential of this approach to push improved sustainable well-being, especially in the newly built high density urban settings?
