2018 SUSTAINABLE DESIGN international conference and summer school in Lisbon

"When architecture and urban design project their desire onto a (…) a terrain vague, they seem incapable of doing anything other than introducing violent transformations, changing estrangement into citizenship, and striving at all costs to dissolve the uncontaminated magic of the obsolete into the realism of efficacy. (…) Today, intervention in the existing city, in its residual spaces, in its folded interstices can no longer be either comfortable or efficacious in the manner postulated by the modern movement's efficient model of the enlightened tradition. How can architecture act in the terrain vague without becoming an aggressive instrument of power and abstract reason? Undoubtedly, through attention to continuity: not the continuity of the planned, efficient, and legitimized city, but of the flows, the energies, the rhythms established by the passing of time and the loss of limits... we should treat the residual city with a contradictory complicity that will not shatter the elements that maintain its continuity in time and space." Terrain Vague, Sola Morales, 1995

Digital Constructivism: Architectural Association Visiting School Buenos Aires

Digital Constructivism, a two-week workshop by the Architectural Association Visiting School (AAVS) taking place at the Torcuato Di Tella University School of Architecture and Urban Studies this coming July, explores the generation of material environments from conceptualization to production. Structured as a series and based on an intensive version of the creative process developed by Diploma Unit 17 of the Architectural Association in London, "Spaces for Knowledge Exchange: New Worlds of Leisure," each instance of the workshop informs the next, advancing its conceptual construction cumulatively. The series is based on the conviction that radical architecture does not require appealing to parallel or fictional worlds, but rather operating through technically precise and spatially creative decisions based on connections with a world that, while increasingly homogeneous, is replete with exceptions, specific conditions, and extraordinary situations. From these, the workshop encourages the production of speculations that transgress established cultural identities in order to define new forms of beauty.

AA Visiting School Santiago: Neoliberal Artifacts

In a context shaped by neoliberal policies, urban design in Santiago, Chile, has been progressively limited to private, internalized spaces. Specifically, through the shopping mall model, which, rather than serving as a suburban solution, has transformed into a vehicle for developing central, pre-equipped areas. Urban shopping malls are large-scale consumption artifacts that not only aggregate a significant amount of infrastructure, programs, and services to meet daily demands, but also represent a "real" opportunity to create urban spaces with a spatial and symbolic richness unavailable elsewhere in the city. However, this complexity comes at the expense of the urban experience. Housing, understood as the center of domesticity, has lost its fundamental relationship with the city and today is merely an isolated component of urban design, the result of an undifferentiated proliferation of housing units, buildings, and blocks that serve no function other than accommodation.
