The call for papers for all sections of the second issue of the Journal of Traditional Building, Architecture and Urbanism is now open until March 15, 2021.

The need for developing 3D digital environments has grown significantly following the pandemic and the imminent digitization of many processes previously conducted in person, transforming how we interact with objects, spaces, and people. This course provides the foundations for building 3D spaces using the Unity platform. Participants will learn how to sketch, conceptualize, and execute ideas within this medium, while also understanding the creative and logistical logic involved in creating these spaces. We will progress from basic concepts to intermediate and advanced levels of production. You will create your own space featuring advanced graphics. You will learn to generate and texture terrain, apply lighting, and import your own creations into your project. Furthermore, the course is designed to encourage creative practice. We will create first-person executable projects ready for web deployment, while also exploring the optimal conditions for hosting them online. We will build basic menus and learn to utilize and optimize free assets to develop more complex, feature-rich projects. Additionally, each project will be reviewed to address individual needs, ensuring your ideas are successfully translated to the screen and the web.

Last March, we announced the winners of the 2020 Building of the Year award, which has celebrated the best of architecture built in Latin America and Spain since 2008. As is our tradition, we called upon our expert jury—our readers—to select their favorite buildings published throughout 2019.

In the coming weeks, we will announce the 2021 Building of the Year award. As a prelude to this new chapter, we have organized a series of virtual meetings with each of the 2020 Building of the Year winners to take an in-depth look at the three projects chosen by our readers. We will host the 2020 Building of the Year awards ceremony through a fully digital experience, made possible by the collaboration of our partners, Crest and Fundermax.

A group of experts will discuss heritage preservation and its future, focusing on the bill currently under debate in Chile to amend Law No. 17.288. The talk, titled "Heritage Management: Resilient Past/Sustainable Future," is hosted by the Faculty of Architecture and Design at Universidad Finis Terrae and will take place on Tuesday, March 30, at 6:00 PM via Zoom.

Concéntrico 07, the International Festival of Architecture and Design in Logroño, invites reflection on the urban environment and the city through architecture and design proposals in various formats. The new edition will take place from September 2 to 5, 2021.

“Our lives unfold through an exchange of nutrients with plants, even if we only remember them when it is time to water them. In one way or another, they are there, allowing us to continue existing here on this planet. However, forty years after the television broadcast of the series Cosmos, it seems we still do not understand plants as a fundamental part of our lives. We continue to view them as a mere source of energy or a raw material to be exploited (capable of defining vast economic sectors); we instrumentalize them when asked to explain the origins of architecture, or we even use their color to tint our projects and ventures with labels like “green,” “ecological,” or “sustainable”; yet it is not common for us to think about them—and with them—when designing. Perhaps to begin settling that debt, in this issue of ARQ magazine, we are seeking essays, projects, and research that challenge the secondary role we have assigned to vegetation, or that demonstrate new ways of including vegetation in architecture, with the minimum condition of moving beyond the paradigm of the primitive hut, as we believe it is time to take a step beyond their mere allegorical instrumentalization.”

On March 19 at 4:00 PM, the next edition of Tech Talks will take place, an event promoting discussions on innovation within the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) sector. Hosted by the Polytechnic School of ATITUS Educação, the gathering will bring together experts to explore how technology drives new creative and design possibilities.

The program’s third edition will be led by DJ GrandMaster Raphael, a pioneer of funk parties, joined by MC Cidinho, MC Mascote, MC Cacau, and Duda do Borel.

Author of many works that define the landscape and the collective imagination of Curitiba, architect Domingos Bongestabs balanced modernity and respect for the environment throughout his career. Far beyond designing some of Curitiba's most prominent buildings, such as the Wire Opera House, the Free University of the Environment, and Praça 29 de Março, the "poet of structures" turned the capital of Paraná into an example of urbanism and innovation.

Dialogue with the forest: A contemplative experience from the "Quintas Maravilha" educational program, part of the Maravilha Project

Nara Roesler São Paulo is pleased to present, beginning March 29, 2025, at 11 am, the exhibition "Isaac Julien – Lina Bo Bardi – A Marvellous Entanglement – Photographs & Collages." The show features 20 works—16 of which are being exhibited for the first time—derived from the film "Lina Bo Bardi – A Marvellous Entanglement" (2019), in which Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992) is portrayed by Fernanda Montenegro and Fernanda Torres. The critical text is by Solange Farkas, founder of the Associação Cultural Videobrasil in 1991 and curator of numerous biennials and exhibitions.

The activation is based on the work “Só por es-tar” [Just to Be] by the São Paulo-based visual artist and poet, which is part of a group exhibition inspired by a book by South Korean philosopher Byung-Chul Han.

Experimental films, polaroids, “film objects,” and previously unseen works by the Rio de Janeiro-based visual artist will occupy the Cavalariças starting March 28.
The solo exhibition brings together a collection of works in various formats, curated by André Sheik, tracing the artist’s experiences, concerns, travels, and friendships.

In celebration of Women's History Month, IAB RJ is hosting a roundtable discussion titled "Women in the History of the IAB" on Thursday, March 20. The event is free, open to the public, and will take place in the organization's headquarters auditorium, starting at 6:30 PM.
