Simultaneous uses coexist, confound, and conflict. Each circulator tries to delegitimize the other by getting in the way, amounting to an all-out war. As more and more people seek alternate forms of travel, there is a need for empathy in how we move through the city. Far from creating enmity, a multiplicity of flows can encourage greater sensitivity. Walkers, runners, skateboarders, pedicabbers, bikers, limousine, bus, and truck drivers, drone operators, kayakers, and swimmers can find ways to share the city, while feeling that their space is free and respected.

The competition is to design new seating that will be part of our improvement project at the Rectory Lane Cemetery. Eight new benches will be located in different areas around the Cemetery. Applicants may either design an individual bench (sympathetic to the proposed location of the bench) or design a composite scheme for all the benches. This competition is being run by the Friends of St Peter’s, Great Berkhamsted (‘The Promoter’).

The Design Matters Conference presented by the Association of Architecture Organizations is the world’s only dedicated annual meeting that seeks to bring top designers, journalists and civic leaders into exploratory dialogue with those not-for-profit professionals and volunteers charged with creating cultural programs (exhibitions, tours, lectures and symposia, festivals and films, youth outreach) to spur broader public interest in architecture and design.

URBAN LAND INSTITUTE NEW YORK OPENS NOMINATIONS FOR 2nd ANNUAL AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN DEVELOPMENT

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is pleased to announce the launch of an international open design competition for ‘The Wall’ - a structure made of a million bricks to represent answered prayer. The competition is being managed on behalf of the charity Network, The Evangelical Council for the Manchester Area Trust.

Gwalior Trade Fair is one of the oldest and largest trade fairs in Madhya Pradesh, Northern India. It was started in 1905 by the king of Gwalior, Maharaja Madhav Rao Scindia, and has now been in operation for 111 years. Today, Gwalior Trade Fair is held at a vast and modern fair complex spread over 104 acres with over 5000 pavilions, shops and ready-to use structures for showrooms and exhibitions. The fair complex has an independent power sub-station, water system, hospital, police station, banks and other modern facilities. The city boasts of its grand annual event, organized by Gwalior Trade Fair Authority – a nodal agency of Government Of Madhya Pradesh. The event is a rare and captivating confluence of glorious tradition, culture, tourism and trade.

The Strelka Institute for Architecture, Media and Design has launched the enrollment campaign for the postgraduate education program. The theme of the 7th academic year at Strelka is entitled The New Normal. Research will focus on the new contemporary condition, which has emerged because of the rapid development of technology—including machine intelligence, biotechnology, automation, alternative spaces created in VR and AR—and define new paths for urban design and development.

The Planning and Visual Education Partnership(PAVE) is now welcoming submissions to its 22nd annual student design competition. Open to college-level students involved in retail design and related fields, the PAVE 2016 Student Design Competition challenges participants to create a new health and wellness design concept for future Kroger Marketplace stores. Proposals can, and are encouraged, to deviate from the brand’s current aesthetic. Designs can either be submitted to the Store Design and Planning Category or the Visual Merchandising Category. Over $15,000 in cash prizes will be distributed to winners in both categories. There is no registration fee. The submission deadline is October 24, 2016.

The Society of Architectural Historians will present its 2016 Awards for Architectural Excellence at the 6th annual SAH Awards Gala on Friday, November 4, 2016. The awards represent a unique coming together of architectural practice and academic study, honoring the contributions of individual projects to our built environment. Proceeds from the gala benefit the Society's educational mission and the ongoing restoration of SAH's headquarters, the Landmark Charnley-Persky House.

In the natural world, adaptation is a competitive advantage. Yet the built environment is frequently characterized by rigid typologies and inflexible designs. How can buildings keep pace with changing cultures and contexts? In “Adaptation,” the 2016 James Harrison Steedman Fellowship in Architecture call for research proposals, early-career architects are challenged to explore how flexibility and adaptive response might be better incorporated into the design process. The winning research proposal will receive $50,000 to support up to a year of international travel and research.

That means architecture which is able to respond and adjust dynamically to the current needs and circumstances. These circumstances are often unpredictable, but their consequences can be crucial. The architecture that reacts is the architecture that lives as a living organism, since it responds to the external stimuli and it develops because of it—to react is to live.
