Beyond the romantic content often ascribed to its political-social aspect, resistance is an ambivalent condition. Because it depends on an external entity, it is not an autonomous condition; that is, it only appears in relation to an outside. It does not exist without something to resist. It is an opposition to forces that, as such, implies taking a stance from which that opposition is exercised. Thus, there can be resistance to aspects as disparate as the status quo or change.

In the mid-eighties, the advertising campaigns for the Benetton brand—under the art direction of Oliviero Toscani—provided an iconic image for the coexistence of different races and, in doing so, for the very idea of diversity. In 2000, an image created by Polish designer Piotr Mlodozeniec spelled out the word "CoeXisT," with the "C" replaced by a Muslim crescent, the "X" by the Star of David—a Jewish symbol—and the "T" by the Latin cross representing Christianity. Through these images, the concept of coexistence became associated with tolerance, serving as a counterpoint to both racism and religious fundamentalism.

It has been 20 years since Professor Carlos Sambricio proposed the idea of recovering, within the Spanish landscape, what we wish to call "the secondary figures"—those architects who, for various reasons, did not enjoy significant critical success during their professional practice, but whose work, when revisited in light of the years that have passed, raises issues of interest to us today.

The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, better known as COVID-19, has fundamentally altered our reality as a society—both in our daily lives and in the future we will build as we adapt to the current situation. Our public spaces are the first to prompt us to question how interaction and community will function within our cities and living environments. For this eighth edition of the Abierto, we seek to understand how the pandemic will transform our public spaces, how our social, economic, and political relationships will be redefined in light of the current global situation, and how creators, managers, authorities, and citizens perceive these spaces and this relationship.

We invite individuals interested in deepening their study of architecture through a historical-critical lens, and who hold a university degree, to participate in the program. All are eligible to apply for the two partial scholarships to be awarded in the 2025 edition.

As part of the activities taking place during the What Design Can Do festival, the Make It Circular Challenge has been launched, with a deadline of January 31. The challenge seeks proposals in the categories of "What We Eat," "What We Wear," "What We Buy," "How We Package," or "How We Build" to help address the devastating effects of overconsumption, waste, and climate change. The Make It Circular Challenge awards a prize of 10,000 euros for the development of circular design projects that help combat the climate crisis in a creative way.

The Faculty of Architecture and Design at Universidad de los Andes announces the open call for Pabellón 2023, a three-day international conference (October 11–13, 2023). The Latin American Master in Architecture [MLA] is a postgraduate program that provides students with advanced disciplinary training in the study and application of contemporary design methodologies, tailored to Latin American environmental and cultural conditions, while seeking an emancipatory and sustainable vision of architecture.

Architectural production is inherently linked to time, whether through the intent to endure or through a planned duration. However, the permanence of buildings is limited: elements wear out, are repaired, and are transformed, while users change their activities, integrate unexpected uses, and adapt spaces to their evolving needs. Similarly, projects with a set duration can extend their utility, travel to new spaces with updated programs, and generate new transactions. Even more paradigmatically, projects and construction are often carried out according to the rhythms of the community rather than a fixed schedule.

Architecture, as an act of human cultural artifice, has historically maintained an indissoluble relationship with Nature—as a site, enclave, environment, material, or mirror of the habitat for communal life, and as a factor of language. Both the symbolic tradition—monument, tomb, idol—and the typological tradition—temple, hut, theater, palace—form the basis of the elemental corpus of Vitruvian formulation. Whatever the artifact to be built, the natural condition is unavoidable. Fire, water, earth, and air—the elements that compose the universe according to ancient philosophy—are, in turn, constitutive of architectural thought. However, arrogance, success, or disruption over pre-existing conditions have dominated human behavior toward Nature. The current state of extreme intervention on the Earth as a planet, on geography as a foundation, on climate as a resource, or on the atmosphere as a domain, demands a critical review of the diverse perspectives that architecture has adopted according to historical, political, and cultural contingencies and their consequences on lifestyles.

Since its inception in 2008, the Bienal de Arquitectura Latinoamericana (BAL) has highlighted architectural developments in Latin America. For the 2023 edition, a new exhibition of Latin American architectural photography is being organized, aiming to expand the range of activities presented in order to achieve a broader and more precise vision of the region.

ARCA is a FAC initiative dedicated to the social and legal recognition and understanding of contemporary architecture with significant value. The modern design of a protected life, assuming a passive body constructed individually in the disease-health opposition, focuses on the elimination of disease through the use of the hospital as a fundamental device for biomedical knowledge and intervention. However, health is permanently reinvented through its social, ecological, and political dimensions, and the medicalization of life centered on the individual is expanding into spaces composed of less static and more complex visions, problematized by (re)emerging challenges such as the recent Covid-19 pandemic.
