ARQ 93 Grounds

Mindful of our mission to promote new territories of knowledge, in this issue of ARQ, we have focused on presenting architectural explorations of new grounds—whether through projects, essays, or research—publishing a range of readings and critical inquiries into a subject that, despite its age, is far from exhausted.

ARQ 92 Exceptions

It was Vasari who, in the 16th century, accustomed us to reading the history of architecture through the careers of great artists—exceptional figures whose talent elevated various art forms to the superior state we still recognize today by Vasari’s own term: the Renaissance. It is not difficult to identify in this the seeds of a way of writing history—and, by extension, of understanding the very tradition of architecture—based on so-called "masters," figures whose oeuvre defines the range of possibilities within an institutionalized system of knowledge we commonly call a "discipline."

The Landmark At Dubai Creek Harbour

Emaar Development is hosting an International Open Design competition for the Design of The Landmark at the heart of the ambitious new world-class mixed-use waterfront development Dubai Creek Harbour. The Development is a 5.6 Million sqm site and is expected to have 48,500 residential units with a population of 175,000 residents, when completed.

On the evening of April 15th, 2019 the world held its breath as the Notre-Dame Cathedral was engulfed in flames. A few hours after the fire begun, the centuries-old cathedral had lost its entire roof, spire, and was severely damaged by the flames. Thankfully it was not completely destroyed and many priceless artifacts from the interior were saved.

Exhibition 'Awards and Works': winning projects from public competitions over the last 10 years

Starting May 15 at 7:30 PM, the exhibition "Premios y Obras" (Awards and Works) will be on display at the Sociedad Central de Arquitectos (Montevideo 938, CABA). The exhibition compiles winning projects from public competitions held over the last 10 years. Organized by the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism (UNLP), the exhibition can be visited in the Salón de las Columnas on the first floor of the SCA. Admission is free.

Launch of the photography book "Urban Parks of São Paulo"

The book Parques urbanos de São Paulo (Urban Parks of São Paulo) features photographic essays documenting the daily life of thirteen parks in São Paulo, as diverse as the city and its population: parks in the center and the periphery, new and old, famous and locally known. The photos reveal the plurality of uses that residents make of these spaces, and surprise by showing them from a detached perspective, focusing equally on both planned and incidental aspects. The book launch will take place, fittingly, at Ibirapuera Park on May 11th at 11:00 AM.
