Adrian Forty, Professor Emeritus of Architectural History at UCL, presents two articles in this ARQDocs in which he precisely discusses, first, the use of the concept (and word) 'primitive' at different moments in the history of the discipline, and subsequently examines its dependency on the written word, extending and revising the conclusions of his book, 'Words and Buildings'.
