Rio de Janeiro will host the world's largest urban garden, according to the organizers of the Hortas Cariocas program. The municipal government-funded initiative aims to promote "food sovereignty, generating self-sufficiency through organic products, and creating gardens in municipal schools and communities across Rio."

The 12th Ibero-American Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism (BIAU) announced today on its website the winners of its four categories: Works, Actions on the Margin, Publications, and Academic Programs.

A total of 9 works and 20 projects were named winners in this edition of the BIAU, an event organized by the Government of Spain through the Ministry of Transport, Mobility, and Urban Agenda (MITMA) via the General Directorate of Urban Agenda and Architecture. The biennial will take place within the framework of the MEXTRÓPOLI Architecture and City Festival in Mexico City from September 21 to 25.

Building Visions is a new architecture series by Chilean director Diego Breit-Lira that, across four episodes, features architects Johannes Tovatt, Marta Maccaglia, Anupama Kundoo, and Florian Boer. What do they have in common? They seek answers to the major questions facing our civilization today: climate change, rapidly growing cities, education, resource consumption, local community participation, and networking.

In early September, the Brazilian Embassy in Mexico launched the exhibition Una nueva arquitectura brasileña, curated by the Institute of Architects of Brazil (IAB) and featuring photography by Joana França. The exhibition is held entirely in a public space on Avenida Paseo de la Reforma, one of Mexico City's most prominent thoroughfares. Approximately one million people are expected to pass by the site during the exhibition run.

The Petition for Just Cities and Dignified Housing is now available online in support of the proposals from the manifesto Brazil Needs More Architecture and Urbanism, an open letter to the candidates in the 2022 elections launched by the Council of Architecture and Urbanism of Brazil (CAU/BR) and the member entities of the CEAU (IAB, FNA, ABEA, AsBEA, ABAP, and FeNEA).

Combining new and old construction techniques, researchers from the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) have built a small earthen structure using 3D printing. It is the first project of its kind in Spain. 

“This prototype represents a bridge between the past – vernacular earth architecture – and the future – large-scale 3D printing technology – which will not only help reshape the architecture of the future, but will also be highly useful in addressing the current climate and housing crisis worldwide,” states the Institute.

The eighth edition of the Open House Madrid festival returns with a program that includes 93 buildings, 33 studios, 8 routes, 7 activities, and 10 itineraries. Titled "More Open Than Ever," it aims to reflect the welcoming character of the city and, at the same time, its openness to the world.

The world’s first hydrogen-powered passenger train service has begun operations in Germany. The 100% hydrogen-fueled rail line debuted in the small town of Bremervörde, near Hamburg. A total of 14 trains will replace diesel locomotives across nearly 100 kilometers of track in the northern part of the country. In addition to Bremervörde, the regional line serves the cities of Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, and Buxtehude.

On Thursday, September 14, the first stage of the Mapocho Río Park was inaugurated in Santiago. Designed by the Ministry of Housing and Urbanism, the project is one of the most significant urban works in the Metropolitan Region, spanning a total of 52 hectares and 9 kilometers in length.

Slow Down! is the theme driving the 9th edition of the Arquiteturas Film Festival to the city of Porto, marking a change in both location and organization. Now organized by INSTITUTO under the direction of architect Paulo Moreira, the 2022 edition of the Arquiteturas Film Festival establishes itself as an international platform to discuss and disseminate architectural production through films, exhibitions, and debates.

On Wednesday, September 28, the 18th edition of the Buenos Aires International Architecture Biennale opened at the Faena Art Center in Puerto Madero, where it will run through Sunday, October 2. The five-day event celebrates and recognizes the social value of architecture and urbanism, bringing together leading contemporary architects and urbanists. For the first time, the event is free and open to the public.

Nearly 100 million Brazilians lack access to sewage collection, according to data from Trata Brasil. The Guaranys community, part of Cidade de Deus in Rio de Janeiro and home to about 450 families, is part of this statistic. The area features homes built entirely in flooded zones and open sewers. To address this issue, the community was selected for a social project that installs biodigester toilets in vulnerable areas.

The winners of the 5th Latin American Landscape Architecture Biennial (BLAP 2022) have been announced. The biennial aims to demonstrate the role of landscape architecture in constructing the human habitat. Serving as a catalyst for reflection and creative inspiration, the Sociedad de Arquitectos Paisajistas de México, A.C., the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA), IFLA Americas Region (IFLA AR), the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Unidad Azcapotzalco, and the Universidad Anáhuac Campus México invited submissions of landscape architecture projects completed in Latin America between 2017 and 2022.

The winning proposal for the construction of the new infrastructure for the Faculty of Performing Arts at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) has been announced. The project will be designed by the prestigious architecture firm Barclay & Crousse. The new building aims to centralize Performing Arts activities on the PUCP campus and strengthen a sense of community by bringing theater, performing arts creation and production, music, and dance together in an integrated space for learning where the architecture itself becomes a stage and a landscape for education.

Geared toward students, professionals, and architecture enthusiasts, the course taught by Juan Pablo Aschner on Contemporary Latin American Architecture is a massive open online course (MOOC) in Spanish. It offers a comprehensive and systematic overview of the architecture built in Latin America from 2000 to the present, providing diverse tools to analyze the variables and intentions behind each building.

Amid paradigm shifts and new opportunities for living, the Colegio de Arquitectos de Guatemala has launched the first Central American Architecture Biennial (BARCA 2021-2022). The initiative aims to establish a shared space for Central American countries, cities, neighborhoods, and people, fostering the exchange of ideas through creativity, research, and academia. Under the premise of rethinking 21st-century architecture and urbanism, BARCA seeks to build a platform for dialogue that showcases Central American architecture from the past decade, creating the first comprehensive overview of the region's contemporary architectural landscape.

To mark the launch of the Wood Chair program, organized by Onesta and the University of Navarra, the exhibition PERPETUUM MOBILE is coming to Madrid from October 6 to 25, 2022. The showcase is dedicated to private-use furniture designed by Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue for their home in Barcelona, updated and produced with the support of the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC).

Featuring a hybrid format, the 28th Colombian Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism (BCAU 2022) will take place virtually from November 14 to 16 and in person from November 17 to 19 at the Neomundo events center in Bucaramanga, Santander. The Colombian Society of Architects has announced the finalist projects for each of the nine established categories.

Castro Abierto is the architecture, landscape, and heritage festival of the city of Castro, Chiloé. The event will take place from October 19 to 23, 2022, featuring various activities such as talks and tours centered on local architecture and culture. These itineraries will visit different architectural works, islands, and neighborhoods in the area, highlighting contemporary projects like Hotel Estancia, Casa Barco, and Casa Muelle. Other featured activities include a cooking class by Lorna Muñoz, a scholar of Chilote cuisine; an afternoon of illustration with the Ilustra Chiloé collective; a visit to the Quilquico Rural School; and the opening of the MAM Chiloé Museum of Modern Art, among many others that can be found on their website.
