Echoes and Territory: Mexico at the Venice Biennale

The Mexican Pavilion presents a creative process in which architecture embraces geographic sensitivity and diversity. The exhibition visualizes the territory, its layers, and cultural expressions through sixteen murals that showcase architectural abstractions, intentions, and contextual appropriations for each work.

Curated and designed by Gabriela Etchegaray and Jorge Ambrosi, the exhibition establishes sequences that reveal a dialogue between natural phenomena, geographic formations, and design solutions. Each stone panel shapes the space, highlighting cross-cutting readings: a country vulnerable to natural disasters due to its geological conditions; a highly diverse architecture in terms of scale, site, and integration; and a critical reflection on architecture's role in relation to the Freespace theme of the 16th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale.

Each of the murals features the abstract proposals of the 21 participants etched into stone (Oscar Hagerman + CANO VERA; Alejandro Guerrero, Andrea Soto | ATELIER ARS; Comunal: Taller de Arquitectura + Onnis Luque; Isaac Broid + PRODUCTORA; Taller Héctor Barroso; Juan Carral Arquitectura; Carlos González Lobo + María Eugenia Hurtado; Manuel Cervantes Céspedes; JSª | Javier Sánchez + Aisha Ballesteros; Estudio Macías Peredo; Enrique Norten | TEN Arquitectos; Taller 6A | Alejandro Sánchez García, Mariza Flores Pacheco; S-AR; Estudio MMX; Taller | Mauricio Rocha + Gabriela Carrillo; Javier Muñoz + Mario Peniche + Augusto Quijano + Alejandro Vales + Jorge Carlos Zoreda; Mario Schjetnan: GDU: Grupo de Diseño Urban; Enrique Lastra de Wit; Estudio ALA; Escobedo-Soliz; Alonso de Garay | Taller ADG), accompanied by aerial photography (Santiago Arau) and close-up project photography (Lake Verea).

The exhibition design is further enhanced by collaborations with Carlos Zedillo, Juan Palomar, Hugo Sánchez, Alberto Kalach, Maurici Ginés, Manuel Rocha, Damián Comas, Hugo Royer, and O-RU. The Mexican Pavilion, “Echoes of a Land,” opens on May 24 and will be on display until November 25 at the Arsenale in Venice, Italy.

The stone panels that shape the space of the Mexican Pavilion at the Venice Biennale will be fabricated by Mármoles Arca.
