More about this product

HIMACS, developed by LX Hausys, is a solid surface material that can be moulded into any shape and is widely used for architectural and interior applications. The brand reflects LX Hausys’ focus on design, sustainability, and durability, offering solutions for kitchens, bathrooms, and other spaces.

Made from acrylic, natural minerals, and pigments, HIMACS is a versatile surface that can be used for wall cladding, kitchen and bathroom surfaces, and bespoke furniture, across residential, commercial, and public projects.

HIMACS solid surface was used in Urban Art Heart, a public installation designed by Stuart Melrose in collaboration with artist Kev Munday, located in Reading, England. This project transforms the entrance to the new Station Hill development into an inclusive meeting point for the local community. At the same time, it functions as a welcoming mural that marks a key pedestrian gateway to the town, framing the new underpass and remaining visible from a pocket park opposite — the ideal vantage point from which to experience the installation.

The installation features a series of bold, geometric forms clad in HIMACS, complemented by Munday’s signature illustrations. Positioned in the central square of the Huntley Wharf development, the work serves as both a sculptural focal point and a functional seating area for residents and visitors. With its mix of bright colors, playful patterns, and durable materials, the installation reflects Reading’s cultural diversity and its commitment to public art as part of urban regeneration efforts.

Aptly titled “Royals, Residents & a Rock Festival”, the project pays tribute to Reading’s cultural heritage by weaving together portraits of well-known figures such as Kate Winslet, Ricky Gervais, Kate Middleton (now HRH The Princess of Wales), and Marianne Faithfull, alongside notable local personalities including entrepreneur Tutu Melaku, scientist Dr. Ethelwynn Trewavas, and table tennis champion Matthew Syed. Iconic landmarks like the Hexagon Theatre, the Oracle, ONE Station Hill, and the town’s world-famous rock festival also feature prominently within the composition.

The 50-metre-long mural required a material that could withstand the demands of an outdoor public space with high levels of foot traffic. HIMACS was selected for its structural strength, durability, and the advantage of being repairable in the event of accidental or deliberate damage. Its translucent quality also made it the ideal choice to realise the designers’ vision for a vibrant, backlit installation.

To cover the wall framing the new underpass, ramp, and steps, a total of 54 HIMACS sheets were fabricated and installed by façade specialists AGS System Ltd, working with a bespoke lightbox frame. Lighting was supplied by Earlsmann and programmed by Lee Savage, ensuring the mural’s luminous presence both day and night.

The panels were milled to exact dimensions so they could be assembled like a puzzle following the aluminium lines of the façade. They were also designed to allow removal for access to the electronics, with discreet expansion gaps incorporated between each element.

Artist Kev Munday contributed his bold graphic style, enriched through a collaboration with local schoolchildren. Their drawings were integrated into his characteristic visual language, with black stencil lines carefully connected so that each segment aligned with the apertures of the frame. The result is a seamless composition where the HIMACS elements slot into place with precision.

The result is a public installation that is both robust and expressive, showcasing how HIMACS can be used in large-scale artistic interventions in urban environments.
