Weather-resistant, durable, low-maintenance
BŌK Modern designs and fabricates architectural metal systems that blend aesthetic innovation with functional performance, including sunshades, wall screens, guardrails, and canopies. BŌK Modern introduces Cor-Ten weathering steel facade solutions. As the demand for durable, low-maintenance, and sustainable building materials continues to grow, this solution emerges as a leading choice for architects and designers seeking performance, aesthetics, and cost-effectiveness.
Unlike traditional painted metals, Cor-Ten steel develops a protective rust coating as it weathers, enhancing its visual appeal while preventing further corrosion. The material naturally patinas over time, eliminating the need for ongoing maintenance and recoating. Stronger than aluminum, it maximizes material usage while maintaining structural integrity.
Cor-Ten steel has proven ideal for affordable housing projects such as Tahanan, Blue Oak Landing, and Africatown. Its lack of need for additional treatments makes it one of the most economical facade options available while still delivering a striking look. Many aluminum panels require Kynar paint coatings, a process with a significant environmental impact—Cor-Ten steel does not.
Unlike composite metal panel systems, Cor-Ten steel is easily fabricated, curved, and laser-cut to create patterns or shapes unique to site conditions and design intent. BŌK Modern’s mounting methods are integrated directly into the panels, often eliminating the need for additional support structures and reducing both material use and labor costs. The inherent strength of steel enables the integration of structural folds into panels, reducing the need for secondary supports and allowing for long-span applications. Laser-cut openings can be incorporated to allow airflow while maintaining a sleek appearance.
While Cor-Ten steel’s patina evolves naturally with environmental factors such as humidity and rainfall, rust drips can occur in the first months of exposure. Solutions include integral gutters at the base of panels to channel runoff to storm drains or planter areas, as well as gravel or landscaped zones to absorb drips and keep surfaces clean.
Details
| Composition | Alloy of steel and copper, developed by US Steel to eliminate the need for painting and reduce maintenance. |
| Weather resistance | Copper content bonds to the oxide layer, protecting the metal and slowing corrosion; rust-like surface remains stable under continuous exposure. |
| Finish - standard | Minimal mill finish with basic deburring of cut panel edges; no deburring inside pattern cut-outs or surfaces. Recommended for panels out of reach (sunshades, ceiling panels, wall screens above 5’). |
| Finish - level 1 | All edges and pattern cut-outs hand-deburred for smoother finish; recommended for applications within reach (balconies, guardrails). Additional cost applies. |
| Edge weathering | Rust naturally covers and smooths exposed sharp edges over time. |
| Maintenance | No routine cleaning required; rinse with water if needed. Avoid acidic or alkaline cleaners. |
| Rust drip mitigation | Optional integral gutters to channel runoff, landscaped absorption areas, or gravel zones to manage drips. |
