Ceramic Facade System in Opportunity Pavilion | Flexbrick

A ceramic layer created with the Flexbrick system covers the ground and facade of the Opportunity Pavillion creating a visual of a wrapped structure with a terracotta carpet.

One of the three main themes of pavilions at Expo 2020 in Dubai a main theme was sustainability, requiring the design to be centered around this concept. The solution was an innovative system by Flexbrick that consisted of a hybrid mesh of stainless steel mixed with terracotta tiles, manufactured completely with biogas avoiding CO2 emissions to the atmosphere.

Using the ceramics & large canopies, the space transforms into a controlled microclimate acting as a passively cooled public plaza where visitors are refreshed from the heat by simply passing through. The design helps in controlling the pavilion's public spaces and scales its volumes to humans circulating and interacting within them. The randomized pattern is created through the hanged structural nature of the prefabricated wall installed as curtains. The structural design and prefabrication also offered fast installation, natural light that shines through the perforations in the daytime, and the light effects from superficial illumination at night.
