More about this product

A new monument in Barranquilla, Colombia is designed to reflect the local culture and industry. Located on a roundabout near the city's industrial area, the monument, called La Ventana al Mundo (The Window to the World), sits at 48 m high and is covered in bright multi-colored glass panels from Kuraray.

A competition by Tecnoglass group was held for the design of the monument. The brief included that the construction of the monument was to comprise of glass and aluminum, with the design intention for the building to represent why the city of Barranquilla is Colombia’s window to the world. The selected design by Diana Escorcia Borelly of GA estudio, was an innovative and colorful design that represents the cultural heritage of Barranquilla and the character of its Caribbean people.

Structural Requirements for Safety Glass

The structure of the building consists of a large aluminum and steel frame to support the colored laminated safety glass, which covers the entirety of the structure, accumulating to more than 2,000 m2 (21,500 ft2) of surface area. The glazed panels are arranged in a harlequin pattern in shades of red, yellow, green, blue and white.

The environmental conditions of the location and height of the building required the strength and longevity of laminated safety glass. Having a high post-breakage strength, high environmental performance, industry-leading edge stability, TrosifolTM and SentryGlas® interlayers from Kuraray were selected by the engineers.

Glass Coloration

The coloration was created by employing colored 100% ceramic frit on the fourth side of the laminated panels. Employing Trosifol® Ultra Clear offering a high optical performance, delivering the most vibrant color from the ceramic frits.
