Structure Protection and Strengthening
The internal structure of a warehouse or factory building is expected to withstand heavy loads, moisture, chemicals, and fires. It is a key investment consideration to protect this part of the building to preserve factory operations. The steel structure needs to be protected against corrosion caused by environmental exposures, while also complying with stringent building regulations for fire protection.
Sika provides durable, reliable corrosion and fire protection coatings on steel structures that comply with the latest national and international standards including ISO EN 12944 for steel corrosion protection and ISO EN 13381-8 for fire protection. Sika also provides an array of passive firestop systems for joints and penetrations and structural strengthening systems.
Secondary containment areas are designed to hold oil, chemical, or pollutant spills from primary containment tanks, to protect the soil and groundwater from pollution. Protective coating systems in these areas must fulfill two primary needs:
- The system must waterproof the structures to protect the soil and groundwater.
- As many of these chemical materials are also aggressive to the concrete and reinforcement steel that the structures are built from, the secondary containment structures themselves must also be protected to prevent damage and loss of structural integrity.
Sika has developed specialized epoxy and other resin-based coating systems to waterproof and protect secondary containment structures. Many of these Sika systems also have crack-bridging properties with chemical resistance that has been tested against various chemicals, per international standards.
