Call for Proposals: Deep City - Climate Crisis, Democracy and the Digital

Big data, smart systems, machine learning – it is inevitable that these new technologies will change the way we study, build and manage our cities. Is the opposition of machine intelligence and democracy inevitable, or are shared trajectories possible?

Ecography—Home and House in the Time of Coronavirus

“Home” is now at the centre of the pandemic. With the commendation for isolation, quarantine, or lockdown, as a way of battling the virus, most of our lives are expelled from the public realm. It would appear we are now exiled at home. We have all retreated to a home space as much as we can, in whatever way we have configured a home. Even with some gradual relaxation, we are still mostly homebound. Which only makes home a poignant place, and makes us think it anew. Oftentimes, a thing that is closest to us and we take for granted—such as home—appears in a new light when the rhythms around it are altered, disrupted, or heightened.

2020 Busan Architecture & Urban Photo Competition

In Architecture, materials aren’t simply limited to the element which composes a structure. The materials are reproduced according to the substance, but importantly, it signifies being greater than the mass only. Thus, it plays a key role in the perceptional process when the five senses are used including the touch feel materials. Furthermore, it indicates that such experiences undertaken by human beings can be integrated through the sense organs. Materials related to the senses of human beings include a metaphysical meaning such as regions, context, land, and memory. Therefore, this competition is aimed at showing architecture and cities that are reproduced in relation to the materials and the senses of human beings.

Architects have always been asked to breathe new life into ancient architectures inherited from the past or into historical –often monumental– artefacts that no longer respond to the customs and needs of the contemporary society. Submit Your Local Website for a Potential Partnership with ArchDaily

We at ArchDaily have a great passion for building and broadening the worldwide architecture community and supporting architects from every corner on our Planet. Unfortunately, sometimes there are obstacles on our way, such as lack of communication, language barriers, or simple uncertainty of some peers from our community about the value of their potential contribution to the architecture scene. And here is where we need help from you, our readers — active, crucial elements of the ecosystem we are all building together. Joining forces, we will be able to give the necessary reassurance to the ones that have been unfairly overlooked and let them know that we can't wait to hear their voices, opinions, and ideas.

We call for you to let us know about your favorite architecture publications with local focus -- whether they are created by you or you just think they are worth checking out -- for a potential Content Exchange Partnership with ArchDaily. This will help us create a strong network of local architecture communities, so we can all learn from each other and spread the word about the little steps on our way to a better world, internationally.

Open Call: Does Architecture Discriminate?

Today, the majority of people in the developed and developing world live either in cities that are the legacy of colonialism, capitalism, and other patriarchal structures, or in landscapes drawn and redrawn by the enterprises of colonial and corporate expansion. Given the magnitude of resources and capital needed to bring architectural design into fruition, the values and objectives of institutional stakeholders will inevitably continue to shape architecture. In other words, the built environment is never apolitical; it is persistently fashioned as a socioeconomic artifact.
