The British Council for Offices (BCO) has launched the BCO NextGen competition, this initiative advised by Malcolm Reading Consultants.
Competitors are asked to consider ‘the office of 2035: what it will look like, and how it will support the way we will work’. The free-to-enter competition is seeking forward-thinking and innovative responses, challenging the conventionalities of today’s workplaces and anticipating future needs.

The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT), in collaboration with the Chinatown Partnership and Van Alen Institute today launched Gateways to Chinatown, an initiative seeking innovative proposals to plan, design, and construct an iconic contemporary neighborhood marker at the nexus of Manhattan’s Chinatown and the southern entrance to Little Italy’s historic Mott Street. Straddling art and architecture, symbolism and function, the new structure and public space aims to become a vibrant place of exchange at the center of one of New York City’s most dynamic and historically rich areas. The overarching goal of Gateways to Chinatown is to provide a new landmark for Chinatown and the surrounding neighborhoods that will engender pride of place, embody cultural and social identities, and stimulate economic development. This new structure and public space will be located on a triangular traffic island in a key pedestrian area bounded by Canal Street, Baxter Street, and Walker Street, informally known as the Canal Street Triangle. Gateways to Chinatown invites design teams from a range of backgrounds to submit proposals to activate the space, honoring neighborhoods past and present while incorporating interactive technologies and enhanced green space. The team, which will be selected later this year, will have a $900,000 budget to design and implement their proposal, and will begin working with the community in early 2018. To this end, its authorities have just announced the international urban and architectural competition “Łasztownia – the New Heart of the City”. The record-breaking prizes, totalling EUR 97,900, clearly shows how serious the Mayor of Szczecin is about the Competition results.
Applications for admission to the Competition, the idea of which is to create a spatial development concept for the Międzyodrze area in Szczecin, including Łasztownia, may be submitted up to 27 March 2017.
Through the Clandon Park International Design Competition, the National Trust is searching for a world-class multidisciplinary design team to restore and reimagine Clandon Park, the Trust’s Grade I listed, 18th-century Palladian house, near Guildford in the southeast of England, which suffered a major fire two years ago.
All interested artists are invited to submit their concept ideas for the Genius Loci Weimar Festival between the opening date of 27 February 2017 up to the deadline of 09 April 2017. Submitted concepts will be displayed in a public exhibition in Weimar in May 2017. The best projects will chosen, among other means, with the help of an audience vote. The three winning projects will then be completed with the help of prize money totalling €48,000 before being shown in the context of an evening tour of Weimar, itself part of a wider festival to take place from 11 to 13 August 2017.
The Ross Pavilion International Design Competition focuses on regenerating and renewing an emblematic site at the heart of West Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh, which is presently occupied by the Ross Bandstand. This nationally-important space, positioned below Edinburgh Castle in the UNESCO World Heritage site, is the seasonal focus for some of Scotland’s most high-profile events, notably Hogmanay and the International Festival’s closing fireworks.
