Enter the 2017 Brick in Architecture Awards competition by April 30.
The Brick Industry Association (BIA) has opened its call for entries for the 2017 Brick in Architecture Awards, the country’s premiere architectural design competition featuring clay brick.
BIA’s annual awards honor outstanding, innovative and sustainable architecture in 10 categories that incorporate clay brick products as the predominant exterior building or paving material.
Entries must be submitted online by April 30. Projects will be judged by a jury of peers, and the winners will be announced in June.
The Deborah J. Norden Fund, a program of The Architectural League of New York, was established in 1995 in memory of architect and arts administrator Deborah Norden. The Fund has supported a fascinating array of projects, from a study of the Cambodian modernist Vann Molyvann, to the social impact of new architecture and planning interventions in Medellin, Colombia, to the insertion of built form into fragile ecosystems in Australia, to the stereotomy of complex surfaces in French Baroque architecture.
The Unmentionables Symposium is an inaugural two-day event hosted by the Department of Interior Architecture at Woodbury University School of Architecture and held at Helms Design Center in Culver City, April 7-8, 2017. Coinciding with the 85th anniversary of the university’s Interior Architecture program, the event highlights critical latent issues within the discipline today. Description via Amazon. According to the essay by Enric Batlle i Durany, the landscape plays a very active role in all of RCRs works. The location is not just an additional aspect in their conception process. It is the physical and metaphysical basis of their work. In this marvellous special issue, full of extraordinary images and stories, a portrait emerges of architects Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem, and Ramón Vilalta that is both intimate and enlightening. It tells about their early years, how they learned from Japan, and gives an overview of recent work. Included are numerous drawings, ink washes, exfoliations, and models made by the office, reflecting both their shared creativity and ongoing dialogues.
The region of La Garrotxa, in Girona, has provided the backdrop for the work of RCR Arquitectes (Aranda, Pigem, Vilalta). After AV 137, which presented the unique and unmistakable language developed by the Olot trio during the first twenty years of their career, the second monograph devoted to the Catalan studio illustrates RCRs international expansion over the last decade. With introductory essays by William J.R. Curtis and Josep Maria Montaner, followed by six works, six projects in progress and six competition proposals, including large public infrastructures like the Soulages Museum, and transformation projects like the studios new headquarters in Bordeaux.

RCR insists architecture has to be neither modern movement, high tech nor in fashion but of equilibrium. 19 projects by RCR Arquitectes are included in this monograph and Yong-su Kim interviews with RCR Arquitectes about their work.
All interested artists are invited to submit their concept ideas for the Genius Loci Weimar Festival between the opening date of 27 February 2017 up to the deadline of 09 April 2017. Submitted concepts will be displayed in a public exhibition in Weimar in May 2017. The best projects will chosen, among other means, with the help of an audience vote.
Designer and artist Andrew Lucia generates a catalog of theoretical objects from the ambient light and curvature specific to their environments of origin. Through a series of novel visualizations, Lucia speculates on the role of ambient light as an underlying force and active agent in the figuration of these new hypothetical worlds and entities.

"New Khmer Architecture and Japan" is the first show in Cambodian History to focus on the architectural drawings of its modern movement. Cambodia is a country with mature architectural culture, not only of the great Angkorian heritage and vernacular timber temples, but also of modern buildings from the 1950s and 60s known as New Khmer Architecture. Since the 1990s, in the context of the post-war redefinition of the national identity as well as the recent expansion of environmental consciousness, this Cambodian modern movement, with their sensibility to the traditional culture and tropical climate, is being re-evaluated; though the drawings and documents of the movement were believed to be destroyed and lost in the turmoil of the Civil War.
How do designers think? How do they visually communicate complex ideas? What strategies do they employ to make a positive impact on the built environment? How does design change the way people see and experience the world?
The College of Environmental Design offers several introductory and advanced programs for those interested in exploring these questions in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture and environmental planning, urban design and sustainable city planning.

The jury panel has selected two students from the ‘Ion Mincu’ University of Architecture and Urbanism (UAUIM) in Bucharest as winners of the Troldtekt Award and a EUR 5,000 prize. Both the runners-up prize and the special prize go to students from Iran.
