“The day that I dedicated myself to call myself D.I.R.T., that was the day that I just stuck my flag in the ground, albeit being toxic ground, and I just said, you know, this is my life’s work ... And I think of Cornelia [Oberlander], and I think about her planting her flag in the ground. And how persistent she was in this kind of … dogged way. “I’m maybe not a savior, but I like to think maybe I’m an avenger. And I am leading a charge. But to have more colleagues plant their flag in the ground and go, really go, and unrelentingly, just believe in what you’re doing. Don’t get all distracted and fulfill the program of projects. You know? Have at it.” - Julie Bargmann, Inaugural Oberlander Prize Laureate The need for activist approaches to design is greater than ever given the scale of contemporary challenges, from climate change and biodiversity loss to racial and social equity. This one-day conference will showcase the ways that landscape architecture is taking the lead in these efforts. Speakers include: Jane Edmonds, Jane’s Way (Keynote); Sierra Bainbridge, MASS Design; Naomi Davis, Blacks In Green; April De Simone, Democracy by Design; Max Dickson/ Danielle Toronyi, OLIN Labs LGBTQ initiative; Gina Ford, Agency Landscape + Planning; Donna House, Ethnobotanist; Angela Kyle, Urbanist and kin-keeper; Marc Miller, Black Landscape Network; Chelina Odbert, Kounkuey Design Initiative; Lee Pivnik, Institute of Queer Ecology; and Maura Rockcastle, TEN x TEN.

Also, the archival research, landscape of natural materiality, the towers architecture that were shelters for heroes of the past, the norms of patriarchy participate in a dialogue with contemporary visual and theoretical concepts. New productions by Alexandra Roussopoulos, Theodoros Zafeiropoulos, Hara Piperidou, Pavlos Nikolakopoulos who creates in situ and side specific installations in the specific points of the space, inside and outside. Real-time visualization is an excellent tool for creating beautiful renderings and streamlining workflows within architectural and design projects. It plugs into your CAD, enabling you to visualize as you design.
On top of the high-quality renderings it produces, its speed and ease of use are some of the reasons why many firms have added it to their workflows. See how real-time visualization has benefitted these three firms.

Architectural firm Iglesias Leenders Bylois Architects (ILB Architects) has begun to incorporate the use of building information modeling (BIM). The greatest advocate is architect Meindert Leenders, who believes every architectural office should be working with BIM:
“It doesn’t need to be a big project. Take an actual case, set yourself a few achievable goals, and try to work them out in BIM." ILB chose 'Bergerheide' as a trial: a project consisting of three park villas, designed in collaboration with the construction company Dethier. The rules for collaboration were clearly set out by project director Vlaanderen Bouwt vzw, providing the architects a sturdy framework for experimenting with BIM.

Beam Center seeks design proposals for ambitious public artworks that will be brought to life through collaborations between youth and creative big thinkers. Projects will be realized by a community of more than 100 young people at each of our three 2023 Beam Project sites: in New Hampshire (NH), on Governors Island (GI), and in a local NYC community. Artists are invited to submit proposals for any or all of these three sites, but each proposal must be unique to a specific site. Artists proposing for Beam Project NYC are also encouraged to consider potential installation sites and partners, and to include these in their proposal. Winning proposals will be selected by a committee composed of Beam Center staff, youth, past project designers, and community members.
Building a city is an ongoing, additive act of creativity. Urban centers are continually being made and remade; they are palimpsests of the values, technologies, ingenuity, and aesthetics of times that precede ours and that were vital in shaping our present. The evolution of the city depends upon designers’ ability to find ways to preserve this past, while shaping a rich and resilient ecosystem for the future.
