The “Cardboard Cloud”, an exhibit design by Fantastic Norway, opened this weekend in Oslo to the public. The exhibit was designed for the Center for Design and Architecture (DogA, previously featured on AD) and will display the works of Norwegian design students.

Canadian-based ACDF Architects have designed an International Financial Center for Dubai (DIFC). The DIFC draws inspiration from geographical and geological properties to create a structure that becomes a natural extension of the site. ACDF Architects work to link the architecture with the region to “give the impression that the building takes root from these natural components instead of simply being an imposing object on the DIFC properties.”

We introduced the Burnham Plan Pavilions designed by Zaha Hadid and UNStudio a few months ago, and now, both are almost ready to be opened to the public. Continuing Millenium Park’s tradition of displaying dynamic public art, the pavilions emphasize bettering the future, which echo the ideals of the 1909 Burnham Plan. Although opening day was June 19th, only UNStudio’s pavilion was complete, as Hadid’s pavilion will require a few more weeks until it will be opened to the public due to its geometric complexities.

3XN architects’ proposal for the Danish pavilion for the Shanghai expo 2010 uses their national flag to create a dynamic spatial environment. ”An exhibition window is an invitation that says: Welcome inside a little piece of Denmark. And in 2010, in the age of globalisation, it is important to add: Welcome to a Denmark that is part of the world,” stated the architects.

Fernando Menis, of Spanish practice Menis Arquitectos, has been announced the winner of the design of an auditorium and congress center for Morro Jable. Taking inspiration from the rocky hillside site above the beaches, Menis describes the design as “a piece which recalls a broken rock, coming away from earth.”

Our friends from RSVP Architects just shared with us their proposal for the ThyssenKrupp Elevator competition in Za’abeel Park, Dubai. The tower seems to morph out of the water and into the air, creating a structure that acts as a monument during the day, and an icon during the night.

1st place, Taller 301
The winning concepts for the Bering Strait Project International Ideas Competition were recently announced in both the professional and student categories. The objective of the competition was to construct a bridge or tunnel to span between Russia and the United States. The project would create a world highway linking Asia, Africa and Europe with North America and South America.
The competition seeks to not only achieve an architectural connection but also a connection among all races in an attempt to form a future society to prepare the world for unity rather than disjunction. The project, due to its massive scale, would require mutual efforts on both sides to complete, thus all must cooperate and communicate to reach success. ”Eventually, it aims to remove the barrier of human race, culture, religion, and nations by letting this obstructed way flow and to being peace to the world…the Bering Strait project can be rephrased as an elimination of all the barriers like spatial disconnection of national borders and chronological disconnection of today and tomorrow, and thus, stepping forward to peace and prosperity for all earth and mankind,” explained the jury.

The Dutch firm Monolab has designed a tower to rise 450 meters out of Rotterdam’s Maas Harbour. Noting the city’s existing buildings as being “primitive and of mediocre quality,” the firm seeks to introduce “an ambitious and pragmatic” structure to the city.

Studio Shift received an honorable mention for their design of the Taiwan Center for Disease Control. The complex, which fuses public landscape with scientific research, is poised to be one of Taiwan’s most important scientific centers. ”The complex will set a new standard in laboratory and research facilities design, paralleling the work that will inevitably take place behind its walls,” stated the architects.

Daniel Libeskind‘s recent project, a series of signature prefabricated homes, is a drastic change from his usual commissions. Although a smaller project (5,500 square foot), the residence strongly speaks his language of design with drastic angles, strong geometries and seamless transitions between spaces. In this ever-growing age of prefab dominance, Libeskind’s villas will be able to be shipped to almost any location in the world within months, and will be assembled on site by a team of experts within weeks.

Meir Lobaton + Kristjan Donaldson recently shared their design for a 36 story residential tower in Mexico City, Mexico. The project addressed the balance between the desire of living in a single-family residence with the cost of the land.

We have been featuring several Re:Vision Dallas entries because the competition has attracted forward thinking designers with solutions we’d like to share. The newest submission from PIKL Studio won an honorable mention for their proposal Commonwealth. PIKL Studio’s proposal envisions the urban block as gradually moving toward becoming a natural community built on effective relationships and connections.

Various Architects from Norway recently shared their entry for the Tingvalla Utstikkeren competition which was organized by the Norwegian Property (NPRO). The competition asked participants to design a new restaurant and service building at the Tingvallautsikkeren, part of the popular Aker Brygge waterfront in Oslo. Various Architect’s proposal created a new public destination that would attract users throughout the seasons by providing an interesting public space, as well as space for a restaurant.

Following an international design competition, Imperial War Museum North (IWMN) selected Topotek 1 as the preferred design team to develop the external spaces of the museum in Trafford. The selection panel felt that Topotek 1′s scheme, Camouflage Strategy, best addressed the need for zones of contemplation, creativity and play which would complement the Daniel Libeskind building.

Three winning proposals for the Re:Vision Dallas competition have recently been announced and include Atelier Data + MOOV‘s Forwarding Dallas prototype for sustainable urban living. The proposal transforms components that make up a city block in an effort to shape how people will live and work in the future.

On May 13, 2008, Bouwkunde, the faculty of architecture building at Delft University, was unexpectedly consumed by a devastating fire. Before the incident, the building had created a social and education environment where ideas and criticism were shared freely. The faculty saw this terrible loss as a positive opportunity to take a fresh and critical look at the education of the future. Thus, an open international ideas competition was organized in 2009 for the design of a new building. California-based architect Sid Wichienkuer‘s proposal for the new building aims to restore the creative atmosphere Bouwkunde offered its users.

The Gruppo Giovani Architetti Firenze (Young Architect Group of Florence) has created three design strategies to provoke critical reflection about architectural establishments in Italy. Studying three important sites, the Galleria degli Uffizi, the National Library of Florence, and the Dome of the Cathedral, the GGAF has created innovative ways to highlight and restore these landmarks’ importance in the city.

Standard Architecture‘s conceptual design, Co-Op Canyon, has recently received an honorable mention for the Re:Vision Dallas competition. The competition provided participants with the opportunity to create an innovative and sustainable prototype for an urban community. Standard’s radical approach focused on how the residents could potentially gain equity through participation in construction, agricultural, maintenance, education and conservation programs central to the sustenance of the community.
