MSDx Summer showcases the latest innovations in design thinking by the next generation of design professionals.

The architecture of Arne Jacobsen and Otto Weitling is of outstanding importance for postwar modernism in Germany. At the same time, the quality of their projects has fallen into oblivion. The curators Hendrik Bohle and Jan Dimog would like to close this gap in the public perception with the touring exhibition and the accompanying publication.

The Istituto Centrale per la Grafica in Rome and the Museum for Architectural Drawing in Berlin present an exhibition by the architect and draughtsman Sergei Tchoban. A native of St Petersburg who has organically absorbed the harmony of this city’s proportionality and similitude, Sergei Tchoban has always striven to understand the laws which govern the development of cities like St Petersburg and the great prototypes in whose image it was created. Is it possible to preserve these cities’ outstanding quality? And is it possible to pursue this quality today, at the current stage of development of architecture? These are the central questions posed in the present exhibition, which marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720 – 1778). One of the greatest artists of his time, Piranesi succeeded in capturing the development of the European city as a phenomenon which, despite many layers and internal contradictions, is nevertheless harmonious.

The Centre Pompidou in Paris has just opened an exhibition dedicated to MiAS in room 29 with a collection of 42 models, 14 sketches and 18 engravings that will be part of the Museum’s Permanent Collection.

Curated by the Politecnico di Torino (Michele Bonino and Francesca Governa, with the collaboration of Francesco Carota, Maria Paola Repellino and Angelo Sampieri) and by Prospekt Photographers (Samuele Pellecchia, Francesco Merlini) with Tsinghua University in Beijing, the exhibition is the result of years of research and offers the public a new and broad perspective that traces a line of continuity between past, present and future, connecting the culture of traditional China with the impressive transformations of contemporary Chinese cities.

Architects love to talk about design, space, and buildings. Within the field, they have a language all their own; the way architects communicate is unique.

The founding principles of civilizations are done through urban cultures nourished by symbols, utopias to engrave identity references and generate memory of places. Thus the fundamental values of our environment such as architecture, the nature city are a vector of social relationships and unification.

In October, the Austrian Cultural Forum New York (ACFNY) presents Spaces of No Control, an international group exhibition curated by Walter Seidl exploring the notion of the modern city and its signifying dystopias of the 20th and 21st centuries. The multifaceted show brings together contemporary artists based in Austria and the United States to comment on the current definitions of citizenship and public space.

Talk Tree To Me is an interactive design project installed for the Month of Design—a month-long design festival in Detroit. The project is a collaboration by Spackman Mossop Michaels (SMM)—a landscape architecture and urban design firm in Detroit and New Orleans—and its partners Detroit Riverfront Conservancy and Sierra Club Michigan Chapter. The project is part urban eco-scavenger hunt and part interactive exhibit. Residents can explore the Detroit Riverfront throughout the month and interact via text message with a collection of 12 different species of trees that have been programed with the real-life thoughts and questions of local Detroiters. The exhibit is live during the entire month of September 2020.

Omer Arbel is an artist, designer and architect based in Vancouver and co-founder of the lighting firm Bocci. Arbel experiments with architectural material and form, creating works that he rather numbers in the order of their creation, instead of giving them a title.

"Equatorial Utopia: 50 Years of Visionary Architecture in Singapore" presents a design survey from 1970 to the present. Presenting a systematic effort to raise awareness and demonstrate the utopian dimension of architecture in Singapore, the exhibition showcases a selection of projects that have had significant impact on the discourse on architecture and urban design in Southeast Asia and beyond.

In the framework of the Barcelona Gallery Weekend, Fundació Mies van der Rohe and Ana Mas Projects present an intervention by artist Laercio Redondo, which explores History and its multiple narratives. The aim is to create a dialogue with space, through sculpture, photography, and a sound piece focused on the question of effacements in time and History, especially in relation to its construction and reconstruction. The intervention can be visited from September 16 to 27.

Now being used as a common word after been used as a slogan for environmental and human rights issues, the word “Symbiosis” was originally used in the field of Biology. This word “Symbiosis” became widely known has a lot to due from architect, Kisho Kurokawa, who has been putting forward the “The Philosophy of Symbiosis” since the 1970s. Being trained by Fumihiko Maki who was part of a project that originated in Japan called “Metabolism” with Kurokawa, Norihiko Dan who is active in both Japan and abroad will curate this exhibition.

The first major exhibition on holiday architecture of the Soviet period opens in the Estonian Museum of Architecture. The exhibition gives the first overview of Estonia’s rich Soviet-era holiday and summer cottage architecture heritage – buildings that made holidays accessible for a majority of people in the 20th century. It provides insight into a little-researched topic that explores the system related to holidays and the architectural context governed by regulations and codes, and also introduces outstanding buildings. It allows an important facet of Soviet life to be investigated – the expressive meeting point between institutionalized and individualized worlds.

For the first time, MSDx will be held as a virtual exhibition on an interactive multimedia platform, showcasing hundreds of pieces of studio work by our talented students.

A lot of people view it as a tradition to visit the graduation show at the Aarhus School of Architecture and experience the many beautiful and inspiring projects made by the new architects.

'Arctic Nordic Alpine' is dedicated to contemporary architecture in vulnerable landscapes, focussing on the influence interventions could have on regions with extreme climatic conditions. The exhibition presents pioneering projects by the internationally renowned architecture and design firm Snøhetta, including the energy-efficient Hotel Svart in Svartisen, the Arctic World Archive Visitor Center in Svalbard Island and the Museum Quarter in Bolzano. These buildings illustrate that architecture can make a significant contribution to the mitigation of climate change by promoting a more sustainable use of nature with innovative strategies and solutions – in dialogue with landscape.

Architects Admit is an online installation that asks people to confess their environmental sins in a climate-based confessional.
