The design of a new Memorial to Enslaved Laborers (MEL) on the grounds of the University of Virginia marks a critical moment to address the complex history of the University – and of the country. It directly responds to a deep need to address an untold and uncomfortable history – one that is still very much a difficult, though necessary, national conversation on race. The goal of the Memorial is to create a physical place of remembrance and a symbolic acknowledgement of a difficult past and offers a place of learning and a place of healing.

NESS and Lots of Architecture –publishers are pleased to present the second issue of our monographic series NESS.docs 2: Landscape as Urbanism in the Americas. The issue reflects on the project of Landscape as Urbanism in the Americas, led by Charles Waldheim and the Office for Urbanization at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and was done with the support of the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies. Curated together with Mercedes Peralta and Jeannette Sordi, it explores the potentials for landscape as a medium for urban intervention in the specific contexts of Latin-American cities.

The AA Visiting School Zurich invites students and practitioners to re-imagine architecture exhibitions, its media, methods, and agents. On the weekend of July 25 & 26, Gray Area is proud to present in partnership with the Architectural Association and California College of the Arts, a transcontinental gathering of leading creatives in art, architecture and design for UTOPIAA, a new online festival dedicated to boldly reimagining architecture and spatial practice in response to the ongoing global pandemic. Curated by the Architectural Association’s new AA Visiting School San Francisco in residence at Gray Area, this two-day event will feature live workshops, panel discussions, online exhibitions and other activities staged in virtual space for audiences in the Bay Area, London and beyond, bringing together the respective institutions’ communities of innovators, designers, architects and academics for a critical conversation about the future of the cities and spaces we inhabit.

For the first time, MSDx will be held as a virtual exhibition on an interactive multimedia platform, showcasing hundreds of pieces of studio work by our talented students.
