The duo that forms the interdisciplinary Chilean office Pezo von Ellrichshausen (Mauricio Pezo and Sofía von Ellrichshausen) have boldly declared their position that “architecture doesn’t need any explanation.” Blurring the lines between art and architecture - in what they term “architectonic art” - the duo has developed this position through various projects with particular attention to the context in which those projects exist and the context that they create. In their attempt to create experiences (architectural and otherwise), the duo has produced a compelling body of work that is conceptual and intellectual, but also sensual and physical. If their buildings explore issues of geometry, spatial experience, materiality, sequences and connections, their drawings present a layered understanding of architecture by exploring the tensions between documentation and experiencing the true narrative of a building or space.
