Architecture doesn't need any explanation

The duo that forms the interdisciplinary Chilean office Pezo von Ellrichshausen (Mauricio Pezo and Sofía von Ellrichshausen) have boldly declared their position that “architecture doesn’t need any explanation.” Blurring the lines between art and architecture - in what they term “architectonic art” - the duo has developed this position through various projects with particular attention to the context in which those projects exist and the context that they create. In their attempt to create experiences (architectural and otherwise), the duo has produced a compelling body of work that is conceptual and intellectual, but also sensual and physical. If their buildings explore issues of geometry, spatial experience, materiality, sequences and connections, their drawings present a layered understanding of architecture by exploring the tensions between documentation and experiencing the true narrative of a building or space.

“Architecture Doesn’t Need Any Explanation” is an exhibition about discovery. It is an exhibition in which architecture is not just to be discovered, but also observed and, ultimately, understood. Through a close reading of select projects, this exhibition reflects on PvE’s specific processes of making architecture and art, on the boundaries and overlaps between them, and how the resulting work activates the eye, the body, and the mind. How traces of these are left in their work, sometimes through a strict geometrical order and balance, sometimes through unique spatial experiences, or sometimes through a continuous exploration between art and architecture. Each of their projects is an experimentation of space and geometry, “anonymous by definition, contextual by necessity.” Rather than showing architecture, this exhibition attempts to probe the depths of architecture and its meaning—from its poetic imagination to its material expression—towards a revelation. It is a discovery of an exceptional approach to architecture for the visitors as it has been for the creators.
