"Ice Breakers" Exhibition to Bring Wintertime Art Installations to Toronto's Waterfront

Between January 21st and February 26th, five wintertime art installations will enliven Toronto's waterfront on Queens Quay West. In a collaboration between Winter Stations and the Waterfront Business Improvement Area, the "Ice Breakers" exhibition was created "to inspire exploration of the urban Waterfront in the colder months."

"The Waterfront is one of Toronto’s busiest communities in the summertime but, like The Beach, it can be under-appreciated as temperatures drop," explains Roland Rom Colthoff, principle at RAW design and a Winter Stations co-founder. "Like Winter Stations, Ice Breakers is an interactive celebration of public art. We want to nudge Torontonians back outside and inspire them to keep engaging with the city."

The five installations will be on display at Harbourfront Centre, HTO Park, Rees Street Parkette, Peter Street Basin, and the Music Garden East. Read on to see all five proposals.

Exhibition: Corinne Vezzoni & Associés - Archimediterranean

How can we use what is already here, what came before, what can be found nowhere else? How can we perpetuate traces of previous lives, heed the clues the site provides, incorporate the emotions it arouses, its singularity, its materiality? Each locality requires its own solution.

Development by Design 2

If starchitecture isn’t dead, then it has surely been rendered irrelevant in a world struggling to provide decent living conditions to at least a quarter of the world’s population. A growing network of architects and urban planners are busy tackling the challenges posed by realities like unprecedented urban growth, climate change and conflict as opportunities to build a more just and sustainable future. As such, resilience, sustainable urban development, the effects of mass migration on cities, community participation, post-disaster response and disaster risk reduction are key issues within our master program that deserve a spotlight beyond the classroom and that today, more than ever, resonate with urban practitioners and the general public.

Frei Otto's Drawings and Models Showcased With Exhibition Design by FAR frohn&rojas

Frei Otto (1925-2015) was best known for his innovative lightweight structures, even naming an institute after them at the Stuttgart Technical University. His speciality in tension and membrane structures were, and still are, not only beautiful, but also incredibly modern for his time, creating forms that were entirely new to the eye. One of his most notable creations is the Multihalle, which he contributed towards with the architects Carlfried Mutschler + Partner in 1975; it still remains the largest freestanding wooden lattice structure in the world.

Following the award of the Pritzker Prize to Otto shortly before his death in 2015, the ZKM Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe is hosting an exhibition of his works in order to introduce "new perspectives on the work of Frei Otto" while "formulating present-day questions concerning the future of our built environment." In service of this aim, architects FAR frohn&rojas created an exhibition design both reminiscent of Otto's deceptively simple structures, and carefully calibrated to show the huge archive of work to great effect. Read on to find out more about the exhibition and its design.

Part III: Manifesto Series: The Sharing Movement

The expansion of non-stop processes of twenty-first-century capitalism has accelerated the proliferation of digital sharing platforms for the exchange of goods, information, and spaces. Today, apartments, cars, work-spaces, and all kinds of services can be exchanged, opening the possibilities for new understandings of the city.
