World Premiere of The Disappearance of Robin Hood

A film by the Urban-Think Tank

The world premiere of The Disappearance of Robin Hood, produced and directed by the Urban-Think Tank, an evening screening produced by ArchFilmFest London in partnership with LFA2018 and the Swiss Embassy in London.

This documentary explores the origins of and ideas behind Robin Hood Gardens, the London social housing complex designed by architects Peter and Alison Smithson in the late 1960s. Produced by the Urban-Think Tank, which aims to open discussion around the housing crisis that London faces today, the film presents us with the history of the building and its community as intertwined with contemporary urban narratives of the city.

Today the Smithsons’ ideas about connecting buildings, users, and sites no longer hold the same value for the authorities. In 2015 the second application to have Robin Hood Gardens listed failed, and in 2017 demolition began on the complex to make way for one of the many large luxury redevelopments unfolding across the city. The housing state now seems destined for preservation in museum galleries and books, rather than as built space serving the people for whom it was conceived.

The evening will consist of the screening of The Disappearance of Robin Hood presented by its director and co-founder of Urban-Think Tank, Professor Alfredo Brillembourg (ETH Zurich). After the screening, Charlotte Skene Catling will host a roundtable with Professor Brillembourg and filmmaker Klearjos Eduardo Papanicolaou, in the company of Professor Sarah Wigglesworth (University of Sheffield) and Simon Smithson (partner at Roger Stirk Harbour+Partners and son of Peter and Alison Smithson), followed by a Q&A with the public. Drinks will be available at The Silver Building bar after the film.

This event is generously supported by the Swiss Embassy in London, the Urban-Think Tank, and the Swiss Institute of Technology Zurich.
