Text description provided by the architects. Excellently situated in the middle of the mountain range of Schladming/Ramsau (Austria) the owners wished for a complex residential building, which answered to the impressive environment – the Karstgebiet Dachstein – with expressive contemporary architecture but without abandoning the reference to the environment. The newly build house is located on a slope and has therefore an uninterrupted view in the directions of east, south and west. In the north, northwest and northeast the property is surrounded by several other residential buildings. Due to the hillside situation the house expands freely eastward, southward and westward in three levels – basement, ground floor and upper floor.

The formal and modern expression of the structure in combination with a shingle-façade creates the span between traditional alpine- and contemporary architecture. The three story main structure is opposed by a two story secondary structure. In between stretches a partly open and a partly roofed area, which forms the entrance and a sheltered parking site. The southern located Tauerngebirge can be seen from this domain.

A glass roofed doorway leads into the entrance hall wherefrom you have access to a cloak room with an adjacent bathroom and a utility room. The “split-level” concept enables having a two story ceiling height above the dining area which is already visible from the entrance hall. The high ceiling allows additional daylight to illuminate the dining area. Taking a flight of stairs down the dining and cooking area is entered. The generous kitchen is screened from view from the living area by a pantry. Next to a detached stove that connects the two areas, is a window with build-in seating furniture. The living area provided with a wide couch is located three steps below the kitchen and dining area level to emphasize the crossover into a very private area. The patio also located on this level forms a roofed area with an enclosed “back”.

The entrance hall leads half a storey up to a gallery wherefrom the office and the parents’ area are reached. The parent bedroom has an antechamber as a walk in closet. Through a viewing slot above the bath tub in the generous bathroom you have a wide view over the south-west direction. Outside this viewing slot there is a sheltered outside area therefore the privacy cannot be disturbed by direct glances. The parent bedroom is oriented southward.

The children’s area is located half a story above the parents’ bedroom. It includes a bedroom and bathroom as well as a multifunctional room. It can be used as a guest bedroom or could constructional be separated later on.

Storage- and utility rooms are situated half a story below the living level. A hallway heads to the generous wellness area existing of a wet area with sauna and steam room, a fitness area and a relaxing area. The 18 m along the façade inside pool including the laying area is illuminated by a roof light. Since the pool is located on garden level a small patio establishes a connection amongst inside and outside.
