Under the Shade: A Reflection on Ephemeral Architecture and Prefabrication in Concepción, Chile

As part of the FUGAZ Greater Concepción Urban Interventions Festival, a team comprising Álvaro Parraguez, Beatriz Harriet, Bárbara Schumacher, Josefa Acevedo, and Luis Cambiaso developed an installation at the Villarrica coastal resort in Dichato (Concepción, Chile) that won the 2022 Ephemeral Installations Competition. The competition called for an ephemeral installation to serve as a functional venue for the festival, accommodating various daytime performances and activities across dance, theater, music, and other disciplines.

Designed by and for the province of Concepción in Chile, Fugaz aims to recognize and promote the territory as a space for diverse cultural expression and identity. In this second edition of the festival, the Lirquén, Villarrica, and Del Medio coves serve as the natural stages for various artistic interventions, workshops, and ephemeral installations, aiming to highlight local features that typically go unnoticed and thereby strengthen the bond between the city and its community. The "Bajo la sombra" ("Under the Shade") proposal reflects on ephemeral architecture, positioning prefabrication as the driver of the design. It conceptualizes architectural practice as the construction of space through the composition of elements—in this case, parasols arranged in an orderly grid to define a place.
