5 Changes to Transform Transportation and Meet Climate Goals

Subscriber Access

Transportation connects us. It is how we get to school and work, visit our families, and access grocery stores and healthcare services. It is also how we ship and receive goods and services. As economies and populations grow, so does the need for efficient, accessible, and sustainable transportation options.

The global transportation system is currently responsible for 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions, a share that continues to rise. In 2019, 71% of transport-related emissions came from road transport (with the remainder split mainly between shipping and aviation, and a small share from rail and other sources). For years, the sector has lagged behind others, such as power and heating, in its decarbonization process. To limit global warming to 1.5°C and prevent the worst impacts of climate change, we must reverse this trend and reduce transport emissions as deeply and as quickly as possible.
