To calculate the amount of CO2 emitted by each country, the traditional method considers emissions from each sector of a nation's economy using a “bottom-up” approach, relying on data collected on the ground. However, a new approach to answering this question utilizes satellite data from NASA.
A new study published in Earth System Science Data in early March introduces a “top-down” approach, using NASA satellite data to calculate how much carbon dioxide is emitted by more than 100 countries, as well as the amount of CO2 these territories absorb from the atmosphere.
