An alternative for students who choose to study away from their hometowns, student housing acts as an extension of educational institutions. Emerging almost concurrently with the first universities, these spaces have evolved over the years to adapt to societal shifts, such as the rise of co-ed dormitories.
Beyond providing bedrooms, these buildings serve as spaces for study, leisure, and socializing, seeking to balance public and private realms. This dynamic is evident in their interior layouts, where reading areas, communal kitchens, and game rooms complement bright bedrooms equipped with study desks—and sometimes private bathrooms. Ultimately, these designs offer the privacy and comfort of a home alongside the shared experiences and social interaction of a school or university.
Rather than being merely multicultural spaces that shelter students during their enrollment, student housing represents, through its daily use and spatial efficiency, the educational ideals of its designers. Below, we have selected 23 student housing projects from around the world.
