One of the first things I hear upon arrival is that the sixth edition of the Academic Event of the School of Architecture (EARQ) was not only organized by students, but is also part of the graduation requirements to become an architect at the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador (PUCE-SI). This management work, without a doubt, carries conditions that closely align with what we recognize as necessary in our discipline today.
What knowledge or skills can one gain from organizing a symposium, a meeting, a conference, or a talk that can be applied to a future career in architecture?
First and foremost, this experience featured numerous national and international speakers (Lucas Carranza, Cuqui Rodríguez, and Juan A. Andrade of JAG STUDIO, Vera Primavera, Esteban Benavides of Al Borde, Carlos Patrón of TACO Taller de Arquitectura Contextual, Carlos Valarezo, Marcela Gonzáles of Oficio Taller, Manuel Gonzáles of TECTUM, Abraham Cota Paredes, BEarq, Cristina Correa, among others), alongside nearly 50 academic presentations by researchers and faculty from across the country. At the same time, workshops were held simultaneously across different locations. Some required brushes and paint, others wood and cardboard, among other specific demands for each session.
