Today, July 25, Sérgio Ferro celebrates his 80th birthday. Born in Curitiba, he graduated in Architecture and Urbanism from the University of São Paulo (FAU-USP) in 1962, where he was invited by João Batista Vilanova Artigas to join the faculty between 1962 and 1970, teaching Art History. In academia, he also taught at the University of Brasília (UnB) from 1969 to 1970. A multidisciplinary intellectual, architecture is only one of his many facets; he is also an accomplished visual artist.
During the military dictatorship, he aligned himself with the Communist Party, advocating for armed struggle and direct confrontation against the regime. After serving a one-year prison sentence, he was dismissed from the University of São Paulo and subsequently exiled to France. He settled in Grenoble, where he dedicated himself to teaching at the École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Grenoble between 1972 and 1989, while also producing a significant portion of his work as a visual artist.
